am thinking of trying his bedding but no idea what it's like, anyone tried it? also how much oer bale is it? and do you use less than wood shavings etc? thankies
i have used stuff called jopack... which is cheaper than equisorb. I quite like the stuff as it is extreamly absorbant and the droppings are easily removed. I can get a bale for £5.50. A brand new bed is a little slippery but settles very quickly, I have never had to dampen it either. I have Rubber mats and use a bale a week, by the end of winter I usually have quite a lot of bedding
I use it on top of rubber mats and get through about a bale per week. Its probably the best bedding i've use with Governor. I take the wet out at the end of each week, and droppings out everyday but it always stays dry on top and never smelly.
As sidney said, it can be a bit slippery when you put a new bale on but it does settle quickly and it must be comfortable as Governor is quite fussy as to where he lies down.
Our muckheap (for 3 horses) is non existent and it'll burn down quite well.
I used Thorobed Flax for one season - the idea or so the supplier told me is to deep litter because it is so absorbent and the underneath doesn't rise to the top but goes almost solid, nor is there any smell. Unfortunately I have a very wet mare who pees like a camel having visited an oasis after 6 months! but the other mare is quite clean.
However I have reverted back to shavings and am much happier. I wasn't making the huge savings as promised. Although it is better in the muckheap size department! Also I had to buy a pallet load at a time which is quite a layout whereas sometimes I like to just get half a dozen bales of shavings when cashflow is low!

Ditto, however I far prefer Flax to shavings. Plus it is very easy to muck out when on a semi-deep litter basis, only takes 5 mins during the week to muck out. It's very nice when first put down, but as the week progresses (with a very wet gelding) it does get very hard, wet rises to the top and is not the nicest thing to lay on, I'm sure!
I think in reality it is a bedding that you have to do partial deep litter, ie take the wet out once ever week/ fornight/ month.
I have a particularly wet boy and I was taking out the wet every day and was only taking out a barrow every day and would top up with 1 bale every week.
I was stunned when I had to move stables when I had about 10 feed bags of bedding!
