I posted before about flax oil as I got a sample tub of it to try, and I was wondering had anyone else tried it or know what made it different to linseed oil, as I thought they came from the same source. Anyway, if anybody's interested, the company have a new website and are launching the product in Ireland and Britain http://www.horseflaxoil.co.uk/index.htm It sounds very beneficial to the horses in a lot of areas but I'm still not sure what makes it so different (and supposedly better!) than linseed oil, especially at that price!!

I'm hoping some knowledageable person will post the diffinitive answer on this but....
... from what I have understood and I might be completely wrong, it is to do with the extraction process whether it is flax or linseed oil. Linseed oil tends to be used for industrial applications and therefore they are not concerned about how much of the omega oils are preserved during the extraction process.

However people often use the name linseed oil when it is actually flax oil which is why there is so much confusion.

Don't take my word for it though, this is just what I have gleaned from the mighty internet which as we all know can be very mis-leading

apparentley, it's to do with the refining process, same as olive oil, you get bog standard olive oil, then virgin olive oil, and even extra virgin olive oil....OK so if i have got this right, flax oil is equivalent to the extra virgin olive oil and is from the first press and has undergone very little in the way of processing, as you get further down the line, the more extraction processes and chemicals need to be used in order to extract what is left of the oil, until you get to the "industrial" wood conditioner linseed oil that you use on cricket bats.

Thanks, that's what I thought initially, that there was a different extraction process to give a more refined oil but people on here kept saying that they were the same thing!! I usually feed all mine linseed oil http://www.tri-ireland.ie/ecom/description.php?II=118&UID=2008090123101678.16.14.1&CatID=22 and they do well on it. I got a sample of this flax oil and put my two competition horses and a mare with arthritis on it it for a month to see if there was any difference, honestly there wasn't any significant difference so they've gone back on the linseed oil!!

Hi

I have also used this stuff - first thing I would say is that it worked for my horse. I have a 5 year old who, when I got her, was a little underdeveloped (I do not think the previous owners paid enough attention to her and I also think she had been "bullied" by other bigger horses in the field) and she was very nervous and eaily agitated.

I have her flax oil every other day and after a couple of months later she is going great guns! Her coat looks brilliant, she has calmed down, nowhere near as nervous as she was and she just looks far better.

I have looked at some of the comments made on the forum and first thing is that the website selling the oil does day that it takes about 10 weeks (not 1 month) to notice improvement (which fits with my experience)

As well as that, some people say that flax oil is the same as linseed oil - as far as I know this is not the case at all - I would drop Jim Magill an email at info@horseflaxoil.co.uk but I am sold - so I will leave that to anyone who has a question for him to email him

Lat thing I will say is that Calzy says that he/she has bought the linseed oil and it is cheaper than the flax oil - I had a look at it on the site suggested and as far as I could work out 1 liter of the linseed oil delivered was about 14-15 euro while 20 litres delivered was 73 euro - the horse flax oil I got was £80 delivered for 20 litres - not the huge difference in price that has been suggested.

Anyway just my thoughts for what they are worth

Good luck
