Was just wondering those of you with experience of the flaxen gene, were your foals born with an obvious flaxen mane and tail or did the mane and tail change after birth at first moult?

I remember a friends horse had it years ago but cannot for the life of me remember him as a foal, must be getting old!

My filly was born in 2006, she is light chestnut/roan with a blonde/flaxen mane and tail.
She was born chestnut and changed colour her first winter. We are still baffled how she ended up this colour, dam is bay, sire black! It was a 6.4% chance!
She is fab though! (I know I'm biased!) And now bigger than her older sister!

toomanyhorses, nothing to do with flaxen, but where did you get the 6.4% chance of getting a chestnut from. Sounds to me like there was a 25% chance, sire and dam obviously carry chestnut under their bay/black coats

Have looked back at our colt born two years ago, he was born with a normal chestnut mane and tail and some lighter shades in his tail, as he grew, the tail got lighter as seen in these pics.......

Bavarnno

however to date from the last picture sent from his owners he is sporting a pale flaxen mane and tail,

this filly is the same........

Alkatinna

They both seem to have the flaxen colouring showing in the hair of their tails when young but not the mane, the flaxen manes seems to become apparent from the age of two...

This filly has her dark chestnut mane and tail and although you see the lighter shades in her newborn pics at six months it has just about all shed out.

Hope this helps
