I treated Stan today for fleas with the usual spot on flea treatment and he's been really odd afternoon, won't come to me and if I approach him he runs away. Outdoors he's fine, just in the house. I met my neighbour whilst out with Stan (he was after one of her hens that had got into our field!) and she said her collie didn't like spot on treatments and she's changed to tablets. Has anyone else had problems? It's almost as if I've hurt him and he's a bit frightened of me, I am quite upset!

Quarrie reacts quite badly to spot ons-from memory he was fine with Advocate but reacts to Advantage and another on. (reacts as in frantically rolls about whining for about 15 mins-there's nothing to see skin wise). what with this and the other one being MDR-1 affected (so I'd want to use Advantage on him). I did use Bravecto with Quarrie with no issues once.
I no longer treat prophylactically -actually neither of them have had a flea treatment for a year now. I do the cats routinely though. I think some of the carriers to get the drug through the skin might feel weird/uncomfortable for some animals.

Mrs Spaniel is experimenting this year with Billy No Mates. We have foxes breeding next door and terrible trouble with fleas and she seems to get itchy with advantage and I hate dolloping the stuff on her all the time.
So we'll see how we get on with this!

I have heard that the collars you can get from the vet are very good. Cost about £80 (?) and last six months (?). I am a bit vague on the details, as you can tell.
Anyone tried them?

seresto? my vet was really pushing these-they are supposed to be good but with two young males who play all the time I was personally reluctant. for a single dog I might consider one.

My partners mothers dog had a bad reaction to Advocate, the dog in question is a mixed breed (unknown) though suspect some Collie in there.
I believe her vet said that Collie's & part Collie's can have bad reactions to certain types of drugs, i think it may actually be Ivermectin.
Don't quote me on it as this is from a conversation a few year back, but I wonder if this may be the case for you?

its the MDR-1 gene. Stan is a BT I think from memory?

^^ and it's the American usage of 'collie' to mean rough and smooth collies rather than border collies - I understand it's relatively unusual in the latter.

prevalence in border collies is relatively low but does occur. in smooths, roughs, Shelties and Aussie shepherds its pretty high in the UK and they should be treated as MDR-1 affected unless tested clear (even carriers are affected by these drugs).

Stan is back to his normal self, thank goodness! He was really quite weird yesterday. TBh I didn't treat my other BTs for fleas on a regular basis and they were always flea free. I think I am going to take the same course with Stan and ditch the drugs! (well apart from the red wine which is for me!) thanks all!

Agree with you, although I prefer white! I never treat our dogs, except puppies have one lot and the adults at the same time.
