Fleas - help!!

I am about 6 weeks into a flea infestation and I am going mad, we can't get rid of them!

Friends dog had the little b*ggers (we see this dog every day). Our 2 dogs were treated with Frontline as usual, but a few days after that I noticed fleas on them. I've been flea combing every day, and 4 weeks later we treated both with Advantage instead.

All laundry has been done on hot washes, we have a flea killing spray that we've used, I've been hoovering like a mad woman. I've also been treating the house with boric acid - some in every wash, sprinkled then hoovered off sofas and floors etc.

We are about 2 weeks post Advantage treatment and I'm still finding huge ones on my JRT! How the hell do I get rid of these?!

i would contact your vet and get something stronger..a few summers ago i had this problem after never having had a dog with fleas before and i got comfortis tablets from the vet and also the spray that they sold for the house... got rid of them and never saw any again...

What household spray are you using?
You can give a second treatment of advocate after 2 weeks in severe cases of infestation.
Have you treated outside sleeping areas too?

I use Nexgaurd. On first use, when we had a problem, all fleas were gone within 24 hours.

Has friend's dog been treated? Do you meet others?...

Hoover, spray indorex everywhere, leave required time and hoover again.
Diatomaceous earth sprinkled round, leave 24 hours. This can also be brushed through the dogs coats but avoid the eyes, nose, mouth areas.
Billy no mates is a good repellent but takes a while to get into the system.
A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar added to their fresh water every day seems to help.
If you take them in your car make sure you treat that too. Freeze bedding if possible before washing.
As someone else said advantage can be used again after 2 weeks.
Consult your vet if you need anything stronger

Thanks for the replies. Friends dog was the first treated - her treatment worked and their house (and other dogs) are flea free. I'll do another advantage treatment this week.

We have 2 big fabric sofas and a lot of carpet, am getting bored of cleaning!

is advantage the one you can buy over the counter? advocate is the one the my vet recommended but i went for the tablets to be sure as one of my dogs has a very thick double coat and i wasnt sure if she had got the full dose when using the others

Vet sold us advantage. 2 doses down still fleas. Vet said they can have up to 4 treatments so we are now on number 3.

Spray some of the flea spray into your hoover bag/canister before vacuuming so that what gets sucked in...does not come hopping out! If doing this you may find less need to spray all over the house.

Steam clean carpet and upholstery, working slowly so the heat can penetrate and kill the larvae.

Aled had fleas when he came to us. The vet gave us Bravecto for him, and Advocate for the cats. Worked a treat. I think we used RIP fleas for the house.

If advantage doesn't work for your dog try a different one. We had the same issue, changed the treatment and all the fleas and mites went overnight.

I work in a vets and for infestations like this, I'd suggest using an Advocate spot on, which needs to be given 4 weekly (also covers worms and lungworm).
At the same time, wash all pet bedding/cushion covers/curtains etc on a hot wash, then spray either Indorex or RIP household flea spray. Vacuum any carpets at least twice a day.
It's a case of breaking the cycle which isn't always easy. You want to kill the adult fleas, then vacuum up any eggs and repeat for at least 3-4 weeks, you should then have hopefully killed off the cycle and be flea free.

(I am currently fostering a feral kitten, which was absolutely caked in fleas. Advocate applied midday. By the next morning, dead fleas all over the floor. No more fleas)

Advocate does not cover tapeworm and if you have had a flea infestation it is important you treat for them

Correct yes, a Droncit tablet to cover the tapeworm is around £2.70 per tablet and lasts 3 months too.
