Hi All,
A yard my friend goes to has just suffered a loss.A young horse died of colic, since the poor incident they have all been told to buy fleeces for there ponys??, i know there mare i have on loan does not have a fleece but a stables and turnout rug. should she have one?,and when should she wear it?! sorry lots of questions!
Thanks
x

Sorry, I don't get the link between the colic and a fleece rug?
I personally don't get on with fleeces - the damn things always pull back and go tight around the wither (even the ones with lined shoulders, fleece wither pads etc)! If you need a warm up/cool down/cooler/dry off type rug then I would just get a cooler to use? Or for cold weather a thermatex is bloomin' brilliant.
What does the owner of your loan pony reckon? If you don't have all her rugs, perhaps her owner already has a cooler for her you could use?

if your horse has colic then your horse has colic. No fleece will change that. The last time i checked, a fleece doesnt manipulate the digestive system. They only come in handy if your horse is colicing and is sweating, then you can put one on to stop the horse getting a chill, but it must be supervised. If it thrashes in a fleece then it may injure itself further.

only connection i can make is that we were asked to make sure our horses have a rug that i available to go with them to the vets in an emergency...? x

This is exactley what i thought what is the connection between colic and wearing a fleece!?!? this is def the advice given as she came round and showed me her ponys new rug and when i asked why thats what she told me!im thinking maybe she mis-interpretated it!?
i havent asked the owner yet but i know he dosent have one for her but will ask when i go down on friday, i dont know if i should bother getting one!

This is exactly what I was thinking. The only use could be to wick away sweat without horse getting a chill.
