How often do your horses do the Flehman responce? I know they do it in responce to smells and sometimes pain, Ive seen my horse do it a few times recently and just wondered how often other horses do it.

Mine only do it when exposed to new up-close smells and tastes.

When first exposed to orange juice, that evoked quite a long lip curling session!

I probably catch all of mine doing it once a week or so, depending on what they're up to. i can trigger it on a couple by scratching their muzzles. Here's today's offering! Had been rummaging at the bottom of the fence and there has probably been some wildlife lurking around there.

I can't remember a horse doing it here for a really long time. It must be very horse dependant, I guess?

Ok, Thanks. It was more a question of how often peoples horses do it than the spelling, as I said spelling not always my strong point.
But you'll get much clearer answers if people know what you're asking about; it wasn't a jibe at your ability to spell. I only clicked the thread because I had never heard of a 'Fleischman responce' and thought I might learn something new.

Mine pretty much never do it, anyway, though.
The TB maybe once or twice.

Yes thinking about it one of ours does it regularly, especially at tea time when I think he's trying to taste his feed while it's being made. The other very rarely does it, in fact I'm struggling to remember a time when he has ...

Robin seems to do it more if I have cleaned his sheath and he then smells it on my hands even once I have removed the latex gloves I was wearing.

I think it depends if you notice a trigger for it? mine definitely do it in response to funny smells or tastes. if a horse was just standing in the stable and did it out of the blue then I'd be suspicious.

I deliberately offer mine strange smells like my coffee, creosote etc but neither of my current pair or the two horses before them did it much, if at all. I expected it more in a horse who served mares but no, he doesn't deign to pull faces.

Both of mine do it if they smell something unusual. However, one of them does it repeatedly if she is colicky. She'll do it every minute or couple of minutes in that case, so it's quite obvious. I hate seeing her do it as I then have to stand there ages trying to figure out if there is an unusual smell or whether it's the start of colic! A useful and easily spotted warning though, I suppose...

The only time I've seen mine do it is when he stuck his nose in my coffee ?. My oldie rarely did it. However a stallion I used to have had a foot fetish, would smell the shoes of anyone within range and then did it. Mm lovely wellies that once stood in mare poo :D

The only time mine does it is when she smells another horse's pee .. usually one she knows but sometimes ones she doesn't .. it's often associated with seasons as mares comming into season .. which is when Stallions will.. But some horses do it with just about any strong smell .. so very individual.

I haven't seen my mare do it in 10 years. She has her own reaction to odd tastes but has never done this. I'd be very worried if I saw her do it now because it isn't normal. For a couple of horses on our yard it is a sure sign of colic.

Tigger does it all the time and does a weird variation where he snorts out at the same time. He does it for attention because it worked at a previous yard on the YO's grandchildren who would rush out to see him. Key triggers at current yard are his haynet is empty, I'm taking too long with his dinner etc

My old tb Frankie did it too but for treats after a friend taught him.

Tigger had a mild colic recently, first time ever and didn't do it at all before, during and after.
