We want to get Toto a rubber type bit, should we buy a Flexi or Happy Mouth? Or are there any other makes that are good?

Thanks

Flexi and happy mouth are the same material, just different makes. Flexi are cheaper. Nathe are also nylon but made in germany not china so are more expensive again

Flexi - Happy Mouth are apple flavoured and my horsey chewed through his in a very short space of time - My flexi ones have lasted far longer in comparison.

the expensive nathe bits arent too bad but it is more the shape of the bits than what they are made of. None of the happy mouths are shaped to fit the horses mouth and should the horse bite it, it will leave a routh surface that chaffes.
Also, with metal bits (esp NS bits and myler) make the horse salivate more, therefore more lubrication and more comfortable for the horse.
Out of all the bits on the market, I think Mylers are by far the best!

Finally someone who agrees!

I utterly hate these bits for this reason (well that an the whole 'oh it tastes of apple'...yeah right!)!

If I had a horse that just would not take a metal mouth piece (though I would try sweet iron, aurigan, alloys etc before ruling this out) I would just go bitless or try a vulcanised IF the horse had a relatively large mouth.

Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate the happy mouth, it's one of the biggest crimes against biting!

Ok rant over...

To OP why do you need a happy mouth? With the horse not take a normal bit?

Yes have heard mixed comments on these bits, but we have decided not to try one anymore. We are going for a metal loose ring with a lozenge instead

We've tried loads and loads of bits, to no avail.
He has a NS for xc and a Myler for everyday work

We've tried so many mouthpieces, including waterford, french link, lozenge, and numerous different bits. We've found he goes best in a mouthpiece with a lozenge, or a barrel like some of the Mylers have. He has a Myler with a barrel ( this ) for normal work, but we need a new bit for xc.

Gah, I hate bit shopping

Most bits are made in china. Its the dodgy bits made in pakistan that are prone to breaking that you want to watch out for.

Happy Mouth are made by the Soyo Corp in China
Flexi also made in China, not sure which manufacturer

Nathe is a German company, not sure where they make them though.
