Flexible, soft rubber bits - anyone use them?

A friend of mine won't drive in anything else, and I'm considering trying them, but put off by the smell, and suspicion that the pony would just eat the rubber.

What are your experiences - do your horses like them, wreck them or hate the taste?

Mine chewed through two in two days, down to the metal core, so he was banished back to metal bits! (And bitless)

I find they give an indistinct aid due to the flexing, I remember having a rubber weymouth on a horse when I was younger (came with it)... talk about a combination of confusion! However horses are funny creatures with their preferences and I am sure there are horses out there that go like a charm in one.
