For those that use a Flexineb for their horses, what steroid dosage do you use and how often?

A friend of mine has just got one for her coughing/COPD horse and the vet has prescribed 1ml/day in 1ml saline.

This seems quite low to me as I think when my old horse first started using it, he was on more than that. It may even have been 5ml for a few weeks and then 2ml after that.

It's one to ask her vet, especially as an off-license use of a medication. The dosage depends on the weight of the horse, along with clinical judgment (balancing the benefits of the drug with risks such as laminitis). However, if it is not having the desired affect it would be reasonable to ask if the dose can be increased, or a different drug used.

I can only say what mine is on, & as rob1585 says best chatting to the prescribing vet.

Mine is pollen associated allergies not dust, but she will vary from 1-5mls daily during the season mostly sticking around 2mls. She is lami prone so always aim for the lowest dose i can, however several vets have assured me that the risk is much lower than with oral steroids as its targeted at the lungs & a much lower dose is needed.

It all depends on how bad the breathing is. When my horse Spud starts to heave I time his breathing for 1 minute, if it is really bad I start him on 5mls saline and 5mls dex twice a day. If it gets worse I phone my vet and get advice from them how much to increase the steriods. It is very much trial and error depending on how bad the breathing is.
