Does anyone know if garlic licks help at all in the battle against flies? I don't give my horse any hard feed at all so I can't feed him garlic any other way but I wondered if it was worth buying a lick? Also, are there any other fly prevention measures that people have found really useful? Last year he was plagued by flies and I would like to give him a bit of respite this year. He is not turned out yet as the livery fields are not ready so he is ok at the moment.

I think the theory is that the garlic gets into the blood stream and, then out through the skin, making it unpalatable for flies. Has always worked for my horses. I would have thought that a lick would be as good as anything for getting the garlic into your horse, for some reason they seem to love the taste.(Keeps vampires away, too!)

We feed garlic and I think it does help a bit... not a complete deterrent though.

I would say worth giving the garlic lick a try though.

We have a fly sheet for April
