Just having a rant - is it just me or are the flies a lot worse this year? We had horse flies earlier in the spring and now they seem to have gone but the normal flies are out in force! My poor boys are plagued from dawn to dusk, they have fly rugs and fly repellant/masks on but even then they are pacing around and generally look miserable! I have been bringing them in during the day and they can't come in quick enough!

Is it just me or are other people being driven to distraction! ARGH!

god me too!!

There seem to be loads more of them this year and they are drving my boy and all the others in the field crazy. They are all over them even with the masks/rugs on and being doused in fly spray

Yes your are right. I have never seen so many flies in my life. My horse is covered in them. When i get my horse from the field all you can hear is the buzzing of swarms of flies. Horrible things. No matter what spray you use, they are still there. Thank god for fly masks with ears and nose nets. I think my horse would go crazy without one. Maybe it is to do with dry summer we are having. Although its about time we had a nice summer !!

deffinetley the flys are horrible this year mine wont wear fly maskys they have gone through about three each already, and i dont like them wearing rugs in summer so i have watered down dettol(antiseptic disinfectant) the one for personal use and put all over there body, but not the face, its also really good for a quick bath, its called the newmarket scrub all the racing yards do it just a bucket of warm water with some dettol in put a teatowel in rinse it rub it to the way the fur lyes leave it get a rubber curry comb in circular directions ro bring all the dirt up, and then get some clean hot water to dettol in then do the tea towel thing again, works a treat for me, most of this what ive put was not nessisery but haha.xx

They are really terrible this year, the horses have been covered and I'm doing the old eye wipe stuff like never before. Yuk !

Yes there are a lot of flies but no I've not had too much trouble once I started the one that really gets bothered by flies (short coated Arab x pony) on Global herbs Fly Free on the recommendation of the lady in the tack shop who said she'd ditched the fly mask, fly rug and stopped buying flyspray for her TB. Well I was sceptical, but tried a tub - and it works for him, despite smelling disgusting and being a bit yellow (he likes to wipe his lips on your sleeve). However I'm not convinced for our native and very hairy NF - I think his coat is too thick and fluffy for the predatory flies to smell the Fly Free in him as well as they do the other - who used to get so bothered by flies despite being clobbered to the hilt he's now naked and not nibbled.:) On the NF I'm sure they land and bite before noticing it, and he's getting a lot round his eyes which is tricky as I've not found a mask for him yet that he likes, but we're coping as he will stand and allow me to carefully smear a fine ring of Power Phazer gel round his eyes which puts them off for a couple of days.

Oh and they are biting me like mad :mad:...so tempted to try the Fly Free myself but it does smell vile! Might let you know what it's like later this week...:D

I use Avon Skin so Fresh body oil on me and it works a treat. Also use it for round the horses eyes as its an oil it stays in their coats a bit better.

Defo a lot of flies around and it's the normal flies more so. Fly spray doesn't seem to be doing much but I've started using hydrophane insect repllant on Harry's face and that seems to be getting rid of the harvest mites, hopefully stopping the flies a bit too. Luckily, he isn't really bothered by them. He have loads sat on his nose but he doesn't seem to care. They seem to love him though! When he comes trotting over in the morning, they are all swarming around him, it's gross! Tempted to cover his fly rug in fly paper, then those little suckers would be screwed... :D

Ditto on the biting me too! I am COVERED in big red bites, only started happening in the alst couple of weeks though!

Me too, I havent ridden round our local bridleway tracks and the woods for weeks now because the whole ride is ruined by the flies. I have to close my mouth, eyes and ears to avoid swallowing them and poor Che gets absolutely covered in them. Ive been doing the wash down thing with a Savlon solution, had no idea it was a racing yard trick. It does seem to help soothe his skin, he is also covered in spray and wears a full veil fly hat 24/7 but I cant leave a flysheet on him during the day because he just gets too hot. I really am beginning to think I prefer the winter :(

there horroble they are eating my pony alive!! he has scabs all down his belly from fly bites then he bites them himself and makes everything 10 times worse
