I'm a mare person, but bought my first ever gelding last year, so not used to dealing with man bits.

This summer, I noticed that his actual man part - he's fond of hanging it down a lot - is raw with fly bites (i'ts pink so they show easily). I've searched, but can only find reference to sheath, not willy. I know there are issues with changing the friendly bacteria on the willy, so I don't have a clue what to put on this, not that he'll let me I'm sure. I am putting fly cream around his sheath area, but this is not solving the willy problem. You would think that he would tuck it away when the flies bite it, but obviously he doesn't.

I can't keep him in during the day, as unfortunately my stables turn into saunas and he would cook. Tried a fly rug, but he's a cob x and got too hot, or do you think being hot is the better option? He has got access to plenty of natural shade in his paddock and he does stand in the shade a lot which is a great comfort to me.

Has anyone had any experience of this? I would hate to go down there later this evening and find his man bit all swollen :(

What a coincidence... I was quitely tending the melon plant out in the garden when a memory of a girl I knew when I was seventeen popped into my head. She was very horsey, even let me ride her horse a few times (my second ever fall: cantering bareback), and as flies were buzzing around in the garden I remembered that she used to put benzyl benzoate on her gelding's tackle.

I might be misremembering, and even if I've correctly remembered the substance might no longer be recommended, so don't act on my recollection without confirming that it's suitable.

I've been using the yellow summer fly cream on my boys but found in this heat it sweats off!

Red Biddy is excellent for staying put but super sticky & ends up in tails.

Can't go wrong with Nettex - fantastic products but pricey.

I've resorted to the Leovet phaser in a tub at the moment until it cools back down - put it on with the sponge.

Neem oil around the sheath , but check your horse is not sensitive to it.Don’t they let it all hang out when hot.

Have a look at Biteback products, sold via amazon. i have the midge cream for my lad who also has pink man bits' and works a treat, and totally natural so no need to worry about reactions.

Ha, I remember looking at my horse and his bright yellow sheath in the field! I make my own flyspray which seems very effective, thank goodness, no more luminous sheath!
