I have tried every gel, potion, cream etc, and nothing seemed to work. My boys are out 24/7 in the summer, and as the midges are at their worst at dusk and dawn, I wasnt around to reapply when it was needed, so I have them in fly masks with ears, they have accepted them pretty well, but it took a while with one of them, but I just had to persevere and it was worth it, they dont have sore ears anymore, and are not headshaking all the time.
Good luck, hope you find something that works for you.

I bought a tub of vaseline and added lots of citronella, then rubbed this inside the tips of Toffee's ears, and this seemed to stop the flies going in there

SHe used to get plagued by them, they are like bats hanging in a cave!
If not the above the summer fly strike cream is brilliant (but bright yellow!!

)

It isn't a problem now however as due to her getting a few bouts of colic and needed to watch her weight, she is now only out at night, so no flies at all, which is another option maybe?
