i noticed yesteray that my boy has some kind of creepy crawley in his ears. they look like small flies although i don't thing they have wings. he had a good ten in each ear and they have been biting him.
i just knocked them out and then covered his ears in fly spray. any ideas on what they are and how to treat them? i will get a fly mask with ear covers when they have gone. and what can i use on the sores/scabs that they have left behind?
i feel really bad because he hasn't shown any signs of disconfort so god knows how long they have been there!

dunno what they are called but they sound like the little flies that pester most horses and go right into their ears - when they are about (they havent been around much yet this year where I am) I turn out in a fly mask with ears. I have tried using fly repellant creams in the past but they dont offer as much protection as a mask with ears.

I have some fly repellent cream stuff that sooths and repels flies and you can put that (well I do) in the ear - obviously not deep down in the ear leave that well alone but the inside bits you can see. My horse keeps rubbing his ears at this time of year so I've told him he's going to have the cream back in (cos he loves me doing it - not!)

. He is always happier after though so it must do the job. Sadly i can't remember for the life of me the name of it, will have to look tonight!
