Not really sure where to put this:
Brought one of my horses in the other day to groom him and noticed at the top of his front legs, where his whirls are, there were loads of tiny little scabs, looked like someone had got several pins and stabbed him.
Brushed them off and thought nothing of it, until I got to his underneath and there were a load of flies on him - all feeding. Obviously splatted them all then twigged that this was were the scabs had come from on his legs as they had made a small bald patch just behind where the girth sits and there were also scabs here too.
Smothered him in fly repellent and sent him back out.
As we then had a couple of cool day I didn't bother spraying him but when I went to do it again they were back. Still on the patch they've made bald, it's about 2.5/3inches big and covered. They were also on the inside of his back legs, a few on his sheath and a few on his tummy.
Again swatted them off but this time tried something called Germi-gel (gold label) as that's usually good at soothing and repelling. However that didn't work so I tried Lynne Russell's Surgical Gel - my fly repellents run out and I can't get over to get some more until Friday. But the surgical gel doesn't work either.
I don't know what sort of flies they are either, they're bigger than midges but they're smaller than horseflies. I don't think they're bots but I could be wrong.
What I wondered was if anyone on here had any idea as to what they are and how to treat them?? They're not actually bothering him but it's not nice. No one else's horse has them and they're not on my other horse either.
