Flinching, tail swishing and stamping

Past 5 days or so, whevever i bring my mare in from turnout, she keeps tail swishing and stamping hind legs, and also flinching at her withers, exactly like a horse may act when being pestered by flies. What could this be? She seems ok in herself. I am going to get her saddle/back checked soon as but looking for other suggestions. Could it be her heat cycle? Ths is my first mare so im not really familiar and i know every mare is different.TIA

This time of year I'd suspect harvest mites. Mine are nibbling their heels and have some little scabs also on their face as far up as the forehead.

I would check the area around and in between her udders. Our mare gets quite a build up of crusty stuff which we soften with baby oil or nappy cream to remove. She seems very pleased to have this done so it must feel very uncomfortable. I wash her with warm water to freshen her up and try and check at least once a week to make sure the cruddy stuff isn't back again. I don't know if that will help but worth checking.
