After reading all the threads this year about NFU renewals going up to stupidly high prices, bad service, etc I did entertain the notion of switching but I think my renewal quote which has just come through in the post has decided it for me.

I've been with them for three years and my renewals never really went up each year by much but this year my monthly payment will be going up by £10!! I've never claimed for anything and all I have with them is vets bills and loss of animal (I'm a BHS gold member so already have 3rd party with them). I don't do any of the "high risk" activities either.

I want to switch but my TB will be 16 in January and I've been finding that a lot of places are funny about insuring "older" horses.

Can anyone recommend a good insurer who will insure a 16 year old?

pet plan insure up to 25 years as far as i know but i think there thing of not covering illness only injury i think that starts at 20 but not entially sure also try kbis as they are are quite good too

I'm with Amtrust Equine for my 16yo so would be worth talking to them but I have a feeling he had to be insured with them when he was 15 for them to continue insuring him past that age (if that makes sense). So I'd already been with them for a year when he turned 16. They will insure him until he is 20 for vets fees etc.

I dont think its just NFU....got my renewal through and it had gone up by 40% so got a couple of alternative quotes. Nothing was coming up any cheaper, and that was without declairing my vet claim history!!! So i just renewed with NFU. My horse costs more to insure per month than my car AND my house!!

I've just purchased another pony and because of the previous threads regarding NFU i thought i would get some price comparisons before i called them to add the pony to my existing policy. The NFu were still cheaper, but i have had the policy 18 years and have a loyalty bonus so that might help me. I hope they are still cheaper come my renewal in January.

Unfortunately insurance has to go up as the cost of the things we are claiming for has increased, i.e drugs and vet charges or the cost of replacing tack if stolen, all are in line with the ridiculous inflation rates we are experiencing.

My quote is including their "loyalty bonus" as well. Fair enough if your quote goes up if you do claim for things but for those who have been claim free, then it's a joke how much the premiums go up.

Yes it has gone up for everyone, approx 40%, all down to vets fees. Good luck with finding a cheaper quote elsewhere, i think you might struggle.

What you need tpo remember is that horse insurance is a loss leader for most companies. If you think of the size of a claim when things go wrong - it can be many years premium in size, so that wipes out any profit from several peoples policies whenever 1 person claims.

I know with my own horse I have had him just over a year £7k+ in vets bills and am now getting LOU on top of that. He has only been insured with the company for just over a year; so imagine the loss to them :( I know that is why we insure, but I suspect that these companies have diminished profits from their other business sides so need to try and claw back something on the equine side.

I used to have my house, car and trailer plus 3 horse all insured with NFU but when receiving my renewal earlier this year, I was horrfied about how much it has gone up, along with my loyalty bonus as well. I have now moved my horses to Shearwater. They were very reasonsable priced and I had heard great feedback as well. My dog is with Petplan though.

Petplan will insure for full vet fees up to age of 25yo is horse is insured with them prior to the age of 20yo.

I switched one of my mares from KBIS thi syear asn their policy did not give me the cover I wanted. Got online offer from petplan 12 months for price of 10, lower premium and lower excess, better vet fees cover.

Got claim going through for my 22yo with them and have paid up OK, although did have to do a bit of leg work on one bill due to an error by the vet. Paid up fine once that was sorted.

KBIS are outstanding for service and only moved the two older ones because they didn't have a policy to suit. My two youngsters are both with KBIS. Now had two claims with them (different horses) and both times they have been fantastic.

My horse is too old to insure (nearly 26) but, our 2 cats are with Pet Plan and have been since kittens, 6 years ago. The renewal has just arrived and despite having had no claims of any description on either cat, it's £265 pa......NFU have quoted us and it's half that.......!!??

My premium with NFU nearly doubled in May when my renewal came through, been with them 4 years and had 2 small claims in the first 2 years but nothing since. I went with KBIS in the end, they seem to have a very good reputation and I could tailor the quote for what I wanted. I also reduced George's value considerably as I really only want vets fees cover, I also no longer insure my tack and I just keep the majority of it at home where it is covered by my house insurance. That bought the premium down more as well.

Hmmm I am waiting for my NFU renewal... I am going on maternity leave soon so will be skint, and looking at cutting costs...

I was thinking that my tack is insured under our house insurance policy, so I think I will take that off for a start. We paid only about an extra £20 on our house insurance to cover any item(s) with value up to £2500 in the UK and abroad, because my husband needs his surfboards and wetsuits to be covered when he is out and about surfing. I think it may be cheaper to do this than to have it on the NFU policy!!!

Anyway I will let people know if it brings the price down very much...

I also had personal accident on mine but when I broke my arm it was worthless! COuld have done with some help towards paying for full livery and transport.

I've been with the NFU for many years, car horse dog & trailer all insured with them. I have claimed for my horse, but all my policies have risen dramatically. I've insured my new horse with Petplan, very good price and they are giving away a free horseware jacket with every policy taken online. And they insure for vet fees up to 25 years old.

I have had my renewal notice, my premium has gone up by £40 a month, also, because I have had two claims in the last 3 years, my excess has gone up to £250 for all three horses, even the two who have had no claims against them. I am moving my business and got a quote that was £400 cheaper through Julie Andrews . People also need to check the smallprint, there is a new clause that states that once a claim for tendon, ligament, sarcoids (and a few other things I cannot remember) has been made on one part of the body, then all other parts of the body are excluded :(

I dont get it when they say that.

If your horse was insured for vets fees of say, £5000 last year, and £5000 this year, and vets fees have gone up, surely that would just mean you get less (treatment/drugs, etc) for your £5000 insured.
Its still £5000 coverage however much bang for your buck you get out of that. I dont get it at all why vets fees going up has a bearing.

Yes when I was looking for a horse I had budgeted for insurance but was completely shocked at how much...my car is cheaper to insure!

petplan will keep them fully insured for all vet bills (not just external injuries) up to 20 when they have to be on veteran policy. Moved frank to them when he turned 17 and the premium was actually cheaper than what we were paying before, he is still in full work, hunting etc so really wanted to keep him as covered as poss :). Pleased we did as he is lame atm.

Yes, Nadia has arthritis on her right hock but now arthritis anywhere on her body is now excluded and also any kind of lameness.
