Just want you all to know how dangerous these things are......

I recently let one off these off, and the lighting block fell off on to me and burned me quite badly, the candle fell off and burnt my neck and chest 5" x 4" not only was this very pain full i have been scared for life and after 3 weeks in and out of the burns unit (they thought i was going to need plastic surgery). Im ok i can live with it, im left with a terrible scar, im lucky it wasnt my face or my hair!

I would hate to hear about it happening to anyone else.

These lanterns should be BANNED

Im lucky it wasnt my face or my son who was standing nearby.

if your thinking of having these for a childs party or wedding in the future

I hope you will now think twice.........

Very sorry to hear about your accident, it must have been terrifying.
They should be banned anyway, what on earth makes people think it's a good idea to send naked flames and bits of wire up into the air, to land goodness knows where?

Thank you for your kind words, They are a menace, ive hear so many horror storys about them setting fields alight etc, they are terrible, i just hope no one else gets hurt by them, I think the more people that know how bad they are the better,
I told the company i purchased them from about my accident and they were not interested at all.

you poor thing. Recommend reporting to Trading Standards, and also sueing the ass off the company. Normally Im anti litigation but these things are clearly and forseeably lethal to crops, livestock and (as in your case) very dangerous for people too!

we santa pod drag strip near us and have been getting a few of them landing in our fields phoned up to comlain about countryside littering and dangerous to animals and they said they had banned them a fortnight ago so some places are listening.

These things should be banned someone near us recently had a party and sent loads of them up in the sky they all came down on my fields scaring the S**t out of the horses not to mention the clear up job we had to do . we collect 36 of them and that wasnt including those that came down in our neighbours fields. Bits of wire are not condusive to grazing animals

A few weeks ago in the evening we were sat in our lounge and see something go over our house, we run out to see what it was and it was one of these things. As we stood and watched it, it caught fire and fell to the ground, we could see another one that had just been let off so stood and watched as my horses where out in the field under where these things where going over. Just as well we did as the next one they let off also caught fire and fell down, right into a field of straw that is right next to my field, i ran over and put it out before it done any damage, so just as well we see it.

Oh you poor thing, I'm so pleased to hear you're ok now...

I hate Chinese lanterns, we had five land in our fields last night, and as a result our very valuable yearling has done a tendon, and is now on box rest, and will probably never make the outstanding racehorse she could have been.
I LOATHE them!

They really need baning before some serious damage is done. Must be awful what happened to you and sorry to say you won't be the last one no doubt.

they scare the life out of me - sending something made of paper and on fire into the sky?!
Went to Glastonbury this year and there must have been thousands of them, on the final night where thousands of people were all crammed in the same spot to watch stevie wonder, we had 2 fly over our heads and not make it high enough to clear the trees - caught in the trees and set them on fire, we are so lucky that it died down otherwise there could have been a mass crush.
The first issue is that people do not hold onto them long enough so they don't fly directly up and away when released, and the second issue is that what returns to earth is some bundle of wire which is just not safe for any livestock. They should not be allowed to be so readily available

I feel very sorry for you, that must have been awful.
For some reason, there seem to be a lot about at the moment. Im not sure what the draw to them is? Im sure they look highly dangerous just from the exterior packaging!
They are highly dangerous wherever they are set off, in the countryside around grass fields, crops, livestock and woods. All of which would make a nice roast if mixed with fire. They are a hazard in towns, with houses slightly tighter packed, and gardens in which children, adults and animals may be.
Im not sure how they managed to be placed on shelves!!:D

I went to a wedding at the weekend where these were let off, I think I offended the groom when I refused to light one and explained my reasons. Typically everyone there was from London and had never considered the consequences, they just thought they were pretty - not saying everyone in London is the same but this group had clearly never spent any time in the countryside.

Maybe I'll send this thread to the venue owner and ask him to consider banning them at future events.

JDx
