2 weeks ago flodden started an irritating cough, he has been grabbing mouthfuls of horse hair as i was clipping so initially i put it down to that. Its an irritation rather than a chesty cough. Just one or two on waking each time. I wormed him, but no change. Last weekend I took him to the vets, she checked his temp, his chest, his lungs and heart and nothing, she looked down his throat and nothing. She thought he may have just irritated it and suggested he have honey a few times a day to lubricate his throat, which I am doing. His appetite is normal, he plays and charges around exactly as normal, but still we have the cough. Just probably 10 times a day, so each time he wakes up, and only one or two coughs. he does not seem distressed by it. He has not been with any strange dogs, he only really meets friends dogs so nothing there. Has anyone any suggestions about what it could be?

Well I did ask that, but no temp, no illness, he is the same as normal, just this cough on waking. and not a deep cough. just an irritating cough. Can kennel cough present with no symptons apart from the cough?

All of mine had kennel cough a couple of years ago and showed absolutely no signs of temperature or illness - the dog that started it tended to retch rather than cough, but all the others coughed.

but non of the dogs he has seen over christmas and new year have it. I will speak to vets again tomorrow and see what they can suggest, and my whippet bitch has no signs at all of a cough or illness. poor little chap.

Sorry I should have said - mine had not had contact with any other dog before they developed the cough, I still have no idea how they got it! It took a good week - 10 days before the second dog got it, then another week or so before the third dog got it.

There are several strains of canine cough and incubation is typically 4 - 11 days and they are infectious before, and after, they start coughing.
It can be transmitted by a carrier or a recently vaccinated dog or by foxes.

ah S4Sugar......... hell that makes sense then. My other dog Nonny was vaccinated just before Christmas! Could she have transmitted it to him, despite him being vaccinated?

Absolutely. The vaccine only covers a few strains and she could have picked up yet another at the vet's.

My friends dog developed something similar to this back in late October, vet was treating it for KC but he started to get worse bring up lots of snot. Her vet xrayed his heart and said he had an enlarged heart and he was put on Abs,diruetics and heart tablets. As he was getting no better and I thought it strange if he had a heart problem he wasnt panting and didnt get tired I managed to get her to go to my vet. My vet scanned his heart and he didnt have a heart problem, they scanned his nose and he had a big infection there. They took a sample and did a culture and it turns out its related to KCso he is on specific ABs. Whilst all this is going on her husband had a cough he couldnt shake off, went off and had xrays and all clear, her GP now thinks its related to the KC, he is now on specific ABs and is improving.

Humans can get B. bronchiseptica which is the strain in the bacterial vaccine.
This is why the data sheet for the canine (& feline) vaccines state that the immunocompromised should avoid contact with the vaccine or vaccinated animals for 6 weeks.

Well I didnt know that, but as humans can catch swine and bird flu not to mention ******* strangles I shouldnt have been surprised.

My BC had KC back in October, A week later the WS got it then my Xbreed was just off colour.(No cough. Vet gave all Ab's and they got over it
Then about 3-4 weeks later BC coughed again so I went straight and got more ab's and he recovered very quickly.
All 3 showed different symptoms to what must have been the same virus. They even coughed in different ways.

he has been checked out, and there is no heart problem, or respiritory problems. But that was last week. And he is still coughing so I will take him with me to the vets tomorrow as nonny has to have her second Jab so vets can check him as well

Thanks everyone. it all ties in date wise.

All good, the vet checked him over, and nothing wrong with him, no temp, no heart issues, no breathing issues, so respiritory issues. He checked the vaccine and is confident it cannot pass on a virulent strain, So it appears we have a very mild virus, nothing to worry about and it should go of its own accord in the next week or so :) And he def does not have a heart murmur. And whats even better........... no charge as he was injecting my other dog anyway :) and no charge for her injection as I paid that last time. I love my vets :) :)
