My horse has always since I have had him insists in clawing the floor when I turn up at the stables or put him on the yard whilst mucking out.

I know that this is because he wants food or associates me with food and not that he is necessarily hungry.

Anyone got any tips on how to stop this. I have tried getting him to stop and then feeding him. But this doesnt seem to work. Any ideas why this is or what I can do to stop it?

Don't know why but we were at our wits end he was destroying the stable but with the mirror when he is stressed he just goes to talk to his friend. My other horse hates it though ,he is quite agressive to other horses and wouldn't settle at all.I got it off ebay they are £25 plus postage and arrived the next day with fittings, took 5 minutes to put up, best thing I have ever bought.Just put in stable mirror on ebay

How about training him to do it on command?

*Runs to find the website....*

-can't find it at the moment-

But when they paw, you say something like 'shake hands' then catch their leg and give them a small piece of carrot. Do this a couple of times in short ten minute sessions, then going without the carrot, and apparantly it helps lose the habit

Ignore the pawing. He's like a child and by reacting to the behaviour in any way or form is rewarding it, even a negative response. Definatly don't feed him. Watch House of Tiny Tearaways for tips, treat him like a little kid having a temper tantrum. I would be careful teaching him to paw for food as I did that with my pony when I was a kid and it kept kneeing me in the head when I put his boots on.

I shouldn't laugh, but that did make me chuckle

I agree about ignoring, its all attention/food seeking.

It blooming hurt, I stopped that trick ASAP. See good example of how HHO can help you by learning from other peoples painful mistakes

One of mine does this and it drive me potty! He digs and bangs the door constantly when he sees you. Ignoring him doesnt work, he can continue banging for as long as you can wait (a bullet would probably be the only solution in his case.....)
