Flu and Herpes Jab reactions???

Hi

Yesterday morning Saf had her 6 monthly Herpes and Flu jab (for FEI) she has never reacted before however it was the first time in the chest???

In the chest as she has recently had chiro and work on neck and wanted to avoid that area

Today she did not want to go for a little stretch

dragged hind toes a couple of times generally not my girl and not eating hard feed.

Was working lates so popped in to find her boob swollen along with her chest, walked her out of the box and could hardly pick up hinds as in dragging them but one chivied was fine???

No temp, was 37.99?

Cold hosed her chest and left for tonight

Would you do anything different, was going to wait till the morning and see and is still the same call vet

I think I would the phone vet and let him decide wether he needs to come out. I have seen swellings at the site of injections before but haven't heard of it affecting the hind legs.
 
My chap has reacted to his flu jab for last couple of years and advice is bute and antibiotics as a precaution and keep making them move about. You'll find that she's probably sore in the deep muscles up her neck and therefore not eating as much as difficult to get head down - although at least it is in her chest - the first year my chap reacted it was in his neck and he really couldn't eat or drink from floor.
I would give your vet a call in the morning to check but prob give her some bute in brekkie to get started. Mine has always been back to normal within a week
 
I would agree with Digger, have seen swelling reactions before but the fact that she is having problems behind would make me give the vets a quick ring to be on the safe side, hope all ok!
 
Its more like her being a Kevin if you know what I mean, she just does not want to but when given a little chivy is fine, just had call from yard she still has not eaten but did take some nuts from snack ball, am at work at 6am so they will call me early and if needed vet first thing ta
 
My boy had a reaction to his flu jab a few years ago - the vet had changed to a new type of flu vaccine (an American one). I was at Uni at the time, but within 30mins of having the vaccine my horse's neck had swollen, he looked very miserable and wasn't eating (he eats everything all the time). My mum was very worried and said he looked very ill and unhappy. We called the vet out and he diagnosed an allergic reaction and gave him antihistamines etc and painkillers I think too. Within a couple of hours he was back to normal. Now every year when he had his vaccine we have to ring the vets about 2weeks in advance (we usually play it safe and ring a month) and ask them to order in a batch of the Equip vaccine which is the version he had had in all the years prior to his reaction. He's had that for several years now and no reaction.

Personally, I would ring the vet and explain the problem - it does sound a bit like an allergic reaction but I do agree with digger123...wouldn't have thought it was affect the hind legs though if your mare is feeling sorry and lethargic that might cause her to be lazy with them...my horse was truely miserable when he had an allergic reaction. Also speak to your vet and see if it was a different brand of vaccine to previously - it might be that rather than because the vaccine was in a different location.

Right vet called long chat, she was fab, seems that 6 month jabs cause more reactions esp both together with the flu and herpes, now she has reacted will have to give separate from now on, more cost lol

Have to clay swelling tonight, cold hose and bute, good job she is off comps at mo, yard were fab too and going to clay her now and we will speak in the am early, bless Saf

Hi, I don't mean to alarm you but my horse reacted to a flu jab a few years ago. The first sign was his back legs swelling and him being stiff, we thought he had been running round and tweaked them. He was very quiet (normally a git) and not eating as well as usual. It took 3 courses of ab's, I had the vet out at least every other day with him for about 3 weeks. He had an abcess the size of half a football on his neck which the vet had to cut because it was under an inch of tissue. It turned out it was a bad batch of vaccs and another horse had milder signs!!!!!!!
My advice would be keep in contact with your vet if not happy get him back out and keep a eye on her temp, my boys got to 104.6 which is blumming scary!

That sounds about right. I have some photos of a racehorse who had a reaction in her chest if I can find them. Let it swell for 4 days with bute, and cold hosing 4 times daily. She was very lame, but much of it was mechanical. She was very down though. Vets werent convinced that there was an abscess so waited a few days for it to resolve or get worse. Then lanced it, first inserted a needle to ascertain whether there was pus inside or not, then lanced it with a scalpel. Horse was cleaned, drained and treated for about 5 days by which time the hole was practically healed. Horse was back in training in about ten days.

Thank you would rather you say and I have all the info, her temp was still under 38 but will check again am, just had last call from yard, she now has clayed chest and boob
 
Oh same side as Saf too, will keep close eye, thanks for the pics, does not even look that swollen and all that pus, love pus

Hopefully hers won't do that, but might have to take camera?
 
I did at one stage have a video of lancing it - you woulnt have believed the speed at which it came out, it must have been under some pressure. As you say, it didnt look very big, but was hot to the touch and the poor girl was crippled.
Hope you have a bit of time before your next competition!
 
I had this prob a few weeks ago now (as you no) but no problems/swelling to the boob area, but all other areas, i phoned my vet stright away who gave bee oral pain killer plus bute for 2 days. The next day bee was a little better and come the 3rd day she seemed fine

from what youre describing ,it doesnt sound like an abscess.Flu jabs convince the bodys immune system that its got flu,and stimulate the production of antibodies.I strongly suspect that right now saf feels like she has got flu.3 or 4 days and she will be back to normal.
 
We had a pony which reacted to his flu jag given in the chest. He was very stiff and had a massive (think rugby ball) swelling. He was very reluctant to walk for the first few days, but not really off colour.
Vet came right back and gave anti-inflams and anti-histamines. He said it was allergic reaction to the carriers used in the vaccine, not the vaccine itself. So we then used a diff. brand on him, with no further probs.
Worth saying that the vaccine company (think it was prevac T) paid all the vets costs due to reaction, which was great.
 
You have plenty of replies to your post so you must do as you wish but just want you to know that my horse has sometimes had a funny reaction to his herpes jab, doesnt want to stretch his neck down and is a little odd for a couple of days, strange but vet felt that it was still beneficial to have it rather than to stop giving it. Good luck and I hope your horse is ok very soon!!
 
Kaismom, thank you my vet said the same, its better to have it than not esp with all the travelling and staying away etc, she will have them separatly (sp) from now

Saf was so much brighter tonight, chest completely down boob still slightly swollen and hard and allowed me to walk her in the school

Now next stage is chiro for second visit on thur and maybe given the all clear for canter work etc
