Hi,
my friends horse had his annual Flu/Tetanus jab this morn, in the past he's always been fine but when we went back this afternoon the horse was acting very peculiar almost like he was drunk, he was finding it hard to walk in a straight line. He ate and had passed droppings, my friend phoned her vet and he was quite concerned but i haven't heard the latest from her yet.
I was just wondering if anyone else's horses had had a funny reaction to having a flu/tetanus jab?
Thanks

I had a horse who reacted badly to a flu/tet vac. It was a very cold autumn day, vac in morning and all seemed okay. Kept on small yard with very close supervision. He literally keeled over at teatime and lay down shaking.Vet summoned, but he was back on his feet half an hour later by the time I arrived. It was suggested that a temperature 'spike' on what was an unexpectedly cold day might be to blame, then later that maybe the vet had caught a vein, rather than just muscle. After that, the vet changed the brand of vaccine used, and we gave him bute beforehand to prevent his temperature going up. It never happened again. Consult your vet and take his advice.

Yes. Mine tied up from head to foot and broke out in a sweat with a raised pulse rate. Your friend needs to make sure that the next jab is with a different brand with a different adjuvant (carrier), because it's that which causes the reaction. She should mark his passport that he should not be given that vaccine brand again, the next reaction could be even worse. Out of interest, was it Prevac?

Yes it was prevac, and we did say it was almost like he had tied up. She just rang me and he had a temperature and the vet said give him bute. Strange as he has had the same vaccine for the past 4 years.
The only thing that was different is that vet gave it to him in his neck and not his bum.
Thanks for sharing your experiences they sound similar.

Mine has been fine for two years with Duvaxyn, hopefully you'll be safe with that too. Mine had Prevac for years and suddenly it nearly killed him (his throat swelled dangerously as well as his whole body going rock hard). My vet says that he has had more reactions with Prevac and now they use Duvaxyn routinely. Tell your friend not to worry too much, it's not the flu or the tetanus, it's just what they put it in. She should still be able to have him jabbed.

Yep Trixie had her booster in Feb and wouldn't move . Well she did but only a shuffle. She was bloody miserable not eating or drinking so the vet came out the next morning and said she was very stiff and to give her bute which did help but she was off colour for a good few days. I am sure it was prevac too.

Will make sure I ask for a different one next time though.
