My lad is due for his flu booster but have told by more than one person it's a waste of time and money because i dont compete any affiliated comps where his passport would need to be shown and equine flu isen't very common.I have always had it done when he had his tetnus booster.I am now a tad confused and hope you guys can offer some advice or opinions.

I would just get it done tbh. Some imported horses locally had it recently and it affected quite a few horses. You don't have to be competing affiliated to have your vaccinations checked - BE or BD have NEVER checked our vaccination cards, but Riding Club events have. We did some area RC qualifiers a couple of months ago and they had a checkpoint on the way in to check our vaccinations were up to date and even checked the description on the passport with the horse - they went into lorries and trailers to check. Those that weren't were turned around and not allowed onto the showground. I've hear of people from Scotland being turned away at the National Riding Club Champs at Lincoln - having driven all that way they weren't alowed past the front gate. Even our RC ensure that everyone who competes at our low key competitions have their vaccinations/passports checked.

Why take the risk? It's only about £50 including call out - opinions may well vary on whether it's worth it or not. Another thing to note is that if your horse comes down with Equine flu and it's not vaccinated will your insurance pay out? Probably not in some cases as they will take it as an opportunity to not cough up - then you're lumbered with vet fees that make the above £50 seem worthwhile.

What you have said makes alot of sense. He has always been done against Flu/tet.His Flu booster is due within the next 28 day.Like you say if he did come down with it and it turned into something worse then would the insurance pay out.Thanks..

I have to have it done for comps (every 3months!!!!!!) but would anyway. This in addition to tetanus, strangles (compulsory too) and encephalomyelitis (ditto) PLUS bi-monthly coggins tests. Poor PF is becoming needle-shy!!

JEEZZZZ I will NOT be moving out there with my girlie - she's horrendous for jabs as it is!! She had her boosdter week before last and I tried a lip chain (having previously had her twitched/bridled etc.... and still had near death experiences), though I had the chain wrapped in vetrap, for protection (ask Maesfenhorse, she was there) and she still had a weeee jump and the vet flicked into her neck!! There is pretty much NO way, you'd ever get blood out of her!!

Hun, round here, you should also consider vaccinating again EHV as well. I know that at work, if we had, had to drop one of the three (F,T,EHV) then it would have been the F! Though of course that wasn't done!! We certainly had NO colds whatsoever last year and you know just how many horses there are there and what a busy centre it is!!

yeigh, without question yeigh, i echo what was said about it only being uncommon because we vaccinate, the minute people stop there will be an outbreak and i for one am not willing to risk that. id rather spend that extra bit of money and time getting my boy done then see him suffer the consequences of not having it done.

Being the old fashioned person that I am and totally paranoid about my horse getting ill, I would suggest you get it done, even though you don't compete at county level it does not mean that local shows are immune from spreading diseases

Also, at livery yards, new horses come and go and are turned out with your horse, so for the sake of a few pounds, I would get it done

If you're planning to compete, even locally, then I would get it done. You otherwise risk being checked and not being aloud to participate. I only get tetanus done, but then I don't even get out much (one pleasure ride this year!) and have my own yard with no liveries.

If you can vaccinate your horse against it then why take the risk I say. Better to be safe than sorry. All ours have ALWAYS had tetanus and flu vaccs, even the little shetlands who never left our yard!

MINE IS DUE FOR FLU/TET the farrier told me today
its not worth it and a race horse he did had it and died

but it just so happend he had an apprentice vet with him who comfirmed this is very very rare.

I am going ahead because our YO rescues and there are always horses coming and going and going to shows etc I suppose if its your horse in your back garden and no one else
brings there horse there I might think different

My horse lives in our fields behind our house, and is just a happy hacker at the moment for the winer, and so are his two field mates. There aren't many horses around where I live and they rarley even see another gg let alone come in contact with them. But I will ALWAYS have both done. Costs me just over £25 for both (as the vets is a 10 minute walk away so I am not wasting call out fee).....I would rather pay that amount of money than risk my boy getting flu, better safe than sorry in my opinion.....
