How many days can you go over before having to start again?

And do jabs have to be up to date for local competing?

I am asking this for a friend as we have strangles on our yard at the moment, vet has advised she waits until it is over before giving her horse a booster as it lowers his immune system so he is more likely to get it. He is due in the next few days. But vet said she can go for up to a month over.

That is what I thought - but is that for competition purposes? Or is it not effective if you go a day over?

You are still covered if you go over a few days (not that the vets would tell you that!) but even if you are over a day the vets should insist that you start again. Obviously for competing purposes, even local, they need to be covered as Equine flu is on the rise. It is advisable if there is any doubt to just start the process again

If you are competing they can not go over even by one day I kow beasuse i have just had to bring my jabs forward as my horse is due on the same day as my show and if i have it done the day after my show i wil have to start my jabs al over again. If the horse is just a pet you would prob be ok

agree with other- for competition, not 1 day.
If jabs are to protect the horse, then a few days/weeks I'm sure will make little difference (after 364/5 days, the horse does not suddenly loose its immunity in a puff of smoke) (obviously vet will have to agree this).

If it's for competition then not one single day over!!

Current thinking is that a year is the absolute max for boosters - & that by that time the immunisation isn't as effective, hence the FEI stance of requiring six monthly boosters.

for competition, not even a day over. in terms of protection, then yes, it makes sense not to challenge the horse if it's trying to fight off strangles and to leave it - he'll still be covered, but you wont be able to do riding club qualifiers or go anywhere that requires an up to date flu certificate - this includes sponsored rides at racecourses etc.
