Can anyone on here explaine to me the correct procedure for flushing out a mare after being AI'd to remove excess fluid?
I would like to know..
when is the correct time for this to be done?
Should the mare be scanned first?
How long should this procedure take?
And how common a practice is this?
Hope someone out ther can answer this for me.

my mare was AI'd on the thursday. checked and washed out on the friday and saturday and a couple of stitches put in. checked on the tuesday and was fine was then scanned two weeks after AI and all was ok and stitches taken out. the vet did say that he was surprised she took because of the amount of fluid.

There are some excellent articles on "problem" mares here, written by Dr Jonathan Pycock:

http://www.pycock.co.uk/articles.htm

We had a very difficult mare who always had fluid after insemination - we finally had success by scanning 6 hours after insemination & washing out with 3 litres of warmed saline, followed by oxytocin injections.
These were done 4 hourly & she was rescanned the next day to check it had gone!

We also inseminated her 2 days before ovulation as apparently Oxytocin works better before, rather than after, ovulation.

Hope it works out for you!
