Hi my horse has had a nasty reaction to a fly bite on Sunday, I didn't discover it until I got there in the afternoon. Its on his side, just under the saddle flap area about half way up his side. There is a visible track going from the site towards his chest about six inches long which has gone no further during the time I was there about three hours - I assume its along a large vein. It doesn't look infected but I am keeping my eye on it and will give it another clean tonight.
I have removed the scabby outside which was just dried serum and given the area a good clean and poulticed it by holding a fairly warm flannel over it to draw out the bite and have thoroughly dried the area and applied dermogel. During the whole time I was messing with it he didn't care, was happy for me to have a poke about! Eating and acting normal.
I have asked that he wear his fly sheet from now on. Obviously if it becomes worse I will ask the vet to have a look in case he needs antibiotics, I won't know how it is until later tonight.
Is it usual for a track to form from the bite? He has had a similar fly bite before which was on the side of his withers and tracked down what appeared to be towards his heart. It wasn't a massive track and as the vet was on the yard I asked him to check it out. I assume that its just a vein that enlarges with the poision and goes towards the lowest point of the horse (it may not of actually been heading for his heart it just gave that appearance!). At the time the vet didn't seem in the slightest bit concerned about the track although did say it was unusual it was about 8 inches long that time! It wasn't infected and I'd cleaned it well that time also.
Please no nasty comments thanks x
