Hi

Having major trouble with a pony for the past few days, she has been bitten badly on her lady bits! bites have joined together to form 1 big one! (I'm just about to phone vet and ask for anti histamine).

I went in to tack shop this morning to see what else I could buy to put on the bites and was given a catalogue for a company called Global Herbs who do a feed supplement which apparently helps horses tolerate flies.

Has anyone tried it with good results? The reason I ask is that pony isn't keen on rugs/fly sheets and I do worry about the amount of chemicals that I spray, This product sounds good but does it work before I go and pay twenty what ever squid for it!

The flies are absolutely prolific at our yard. The horse I have atm is allergic to midges, and detests horse flies, so I tried him on Flyfree. The stuff stinks, and it didn't work, is all I can say. Perhaps you'd have more success on a yard where the flies weren't so evil and detemined, but I won't be buying another tub.

We use it on our yard and its fab ! The only downside is that it smells like curry powder so be very careful when you are putting it in your horses feed, unless you want to be fly-free to ! The horses who are on it on our yard are fly free without any use of sprays. Really would suggest giving it a go and seeing what you think

I used it on my boy as i got a tester from local tack shop, and he refused to eat it.. I gave him another bucket of the exact same without the Fly Free and he ate it all.. It smells SO bad :(

Belle and Splish wont touch it, Mason will eat it, but then we've yet to find anything Mason won't eat!
Does seem to work, but smells foul! if you go for it, definitely introduce it slowly!

I'm using it on our 2, a NF (who is OK with flys, lots of hair so harder for them to bite) and a 20 year old chestnut arab x show pony who is really bothered by flys continually.

I agree it smells foul, but I've found they will eat it having introduced gradually.

I am not convinced there's masses of difference with the NF, his chest is still nibbled as is his undercarriage - but perhaps a bit less so since starting with it.
However the chestnut is now being far bitten less than the NF, so a huge improvement, almost no bites. Am still putting a little cream underneath and on his ears but rather than twice daily I'm now doing it every 3rd day or so (Power Phaser gel), when I notice a few flies really. I've taken off his fly mask and fly rug as they annoyed him (half the time mask was off) and it's too hot for a rug. Cost wise I'd say I'm spending as much on the Fly free as we were on the fly ointments etc but time wise saving 15 mins+ a day, and I'm sure they're more comfortable, esp the arab x. I've also cut out the garlic I was giving them, don't think that did anything other than accustom them to stronger flavours.

I noticed the latest Horse and Rider (I think) had an offer to send for a sample - might as well see if your horse will eat it!
