Amber has lots of fly bites that have swollen up and some have gone a bit "pussy".

I havent been to see her for about a week due to work but YO and OH have been looking after her. The fly bites only really come up Thursday/Friday and some were oozing Sunday.

All are being purple sprayed and fly repallent is being applied everyday. Amber had her fly rug put on Saturday and yesterday I changed it to a LW turnout (wish this weather would make its mind up).

Has anyone had fly bites come up like this before? I've seen them come up lumpy, but not oozing.

hi
i found lots of swelings on my ponys tummy yesterday, i rang the vet and he said that theres been lots of calls regarding this. He said to wash down in diluted hibiscrub and give bute twice a day for three days for inflamation. When i went up last night the lumps had gone. Its a midge bite.
My mates mare had them as well last week, they had puss coming from them, they were infected, she had to have a antibiotic jab, she was really quite poorly with it.
I would definatly call the vet, sounds like the bites are infected.
Wouldnt use purple spray either. Horrible stuff

Are they def fly bites?

Not a reaction to something in the field, or something in her feed?

I think they are fly bites as she had them before when I first got her. My mums horse also used to go lumpy from fly bites.

When she was out before boxrest she didnt have any come up and she is not having feed at the moment.

Will give the vet a call then and see what he thinks. She seems ok in herself, but its best to be safe. Thanks.

This is my first time on the H&H forums, hello everyone!
My horse had lots of lumps come up on her neck a few weeks ago. We decided that the were fly/midge bites as it had been quite warm (believe it or not!) and she hadn't eaten or been anywhere different. Washed her neck with some antiseptic cleansing wash then put good fly repellent on. But i think the thing that helped the most was giving her human antihistamine tablets! Gave her 6 crushed up tablets a day (in one go, in a handful of feed) for about three days and the lumps started to go down really quickly! However, although her lumps looked huge, they didn't get infected, I might have given the vet a call if they had.
