Hi. I live in a farmhouse on an old non-working milk farm(rented). We also rent the stable yard and use of one field.
However, we have lived here now for 6 years. And for 4 of those years we have been faced with fly-grazing. These are gypsy horses and goats/sheep and even cows.
In the first couple of years, abandonment notices were served, world horse welfare and rspca were called multiple times. But our landowners have found that nothing works. They have also tried placing HUGE boulders by the gate in order to stop the gypsies from entering the land. Nothing works and for the last couple of years, the landowners have given up and the land is ruined.
I try not to get on the wrong side of them and have found myself even herding their animals back into the field when they have escaped for their safety.
BUT, fast forward 2 years, the gypsies have well and truly taken over. They have chopped out all cattle partitions, any scrap metal, and all fences have been removed. Therefore I can no longer turn my horse out. They are also accessing my yard and even after asking them not to do so; they are now leaving my gate opening meaning my horse is now in danger of getting out.
I have contacted my landowners and they have told us to ring the police but I don’t want to get on the wrong side of the gypsies putting my animals and home at risk. And I feel as though it is not my responsibility to do so. I pay rent for the yard and a field and am completely unable to use any fields meaning my horse is stuck in his stable/on our yard.
Would anybody know how to deal with this in the right way?! I am at my wits end with it all and don’t want to have to move our horse away from home. But I feel they have been there that long that they believe they have a right to be there and it will be super difficult for them to be moved?!
