Hi,

Since it's warming up I need a bit of a recommendation if poss... I'll need a fly mask for the little horse as he had an iridium wire treatment for a sarcoid on his eye and I will need to keep the nasty flies out of the scar/wound/eye, I've never had to buy one and the one at the yard of unknown origin is always found in hedge!

Anyone got any recommendatiosn for ones that don't come off easily and are comfy?

Many thanks in advance (hopefully) :D

If he is likely to be at permanent risk to damage in that eye then the Guardian Masks are the best ones of all, designed for horses with UVeitis, eye injuries and the like. We've had great success with the Equilibrium ones as they are highly adjustable and seem very comfortable for the horses to wear.

Can you buy the guardian fly mask on its own? Everywhere i've looked sell the rug with a free mask! My boy has had uvetits so would like just the mask for him.

The best ones that i have come accross that stay put are the Farnam fly masks and also the Premier Equine masks- neither make seems to budge!

The only mask I have found that stays on my horse (and he is complete git who can remove anything including his own rugs!) is the equilibrium field relief. Its padded and elasticated so even if they roll and scrub at it, it somehow clings on. I got one last year and by the end of the summer the whole yard were wearing them!

Love the 'clings on' description! I think I might go for the equilibrium one, he's a TB who is between a full/cob size so I think I'll aim for medium as headcollars it's cob, bridle small full :)

Thanks for the suggestions and advice :D

another vote for equilibrium, not only do they stay on (they're quite strechy, makes all the difference) but they last and last. My boy had one for 4 yrs!! Other people up the yard buy £10/15 ones and they go through several a season! Such a false ecomony!

Quick update as it is the season for buying such items! I bought the equilibrium field relief (no ears or nose) in Med for my 15.2 TB. Fits like a dream, love the padded stretchy won't fall off-ness of it....

He's been fully turned out in the field for a week and had stay put success until this morning when he was found muching grass minus mask and it was found next to his favourite tree....

To be fair the poor mask has put up with a lot from the little b*gger, being rubbed on trees/spikey bushes/grazing in said trees/spikey bushes (as the mask seems to make him even more invincible in his mind!). It's got a fair few holes in it around the sides and head bit thankfully where the fabric overlaps a bit so no flies can get in still....

He's very comfy in and still tonks round like the loony he is and doesn't seem bothered by it all :D He just needs to realise it isn't the mask of Zorro and it won't make him invincible :o :p :D

It survived well and has now been ripped to shreds by the boy with his heads in the trees/thistles/bushes/fence....

Am off to try a PE one with fieldsafe headcollar as they look sturdier built!

I second this, only ones that stay on my two, even throughout the constant play fighting and nipping! Wish same could be said about their rugs!!!
