Does anyone have a tried and tested concoction to ward off flying beasties? I'm in need of a decent spray/cream to cover my boys, one of which I think has sweet itch. I have just bought some bog myrtle, citronnella, tea tree, manuka and a big neem oil but would need a recipe to concoct it all up. I know people use cold tea and white vinegar, what do you think? Any ideas greatly received.

an application of baby oil to the tummy keeps midges from biting that area
they can't get a grip upside down to bite, and the tummy isn't in the sunshine so it won't burn with the baby oil on. use this one myself and it really works.

avon skin so soft is good for top linesweet itch i've been told

my fly spray recipe is 100ml citronella, 2 tblspns methalated spirits, 2 tblspns washing up liquid, 500ml vinager, 4 tea bags brewd and left to cool, all made up to 2 litres with water

neem oil is supposed to be fab, not tried it myself though
 
Thanks, I cover him in baby oil and netex itch stop salve at the mo. I havn't put the baby oil under him though, not thought of that. I've got an order from avon coming in the next few days of 2 bottles of skin so soft dry oil. I'm going crackers trying to help him, I dread to think how he feels.
Do you think if I mix oils it would weaken them?
Not done it before.

Equestrian clearance have a offer on at the moment ive just picked up a fly sheet with neck( Masta) for £22.99.That has to be cheaper in the long run.
 
Mixing essential oils does not weaken them. Just do not go over board. We made a mix this week - 20 citronella, 10 lavender, 10 geranium (sp?) , tea mixed normal with peppermint, ecover washing up liquid, cider vinegar.

Shaken in a spray bottle from tesco (in the plant section) has a really fine spray and it mists well over the body.

Smells good and works!
 
Try this - I am also about to add two teaspoons of bog myrtle as someone on here uses my mix and found this made it even more effective.

5 caps of dettol - from a 500ml size bottle

250 ml of Avon Skin so Soft and fresh - 500 ml bath oil. This can be halved if midges not too bad.

2 teaspoons of citronella oil
2 teaspoons of eucalyptus oil
2 teaspoons of lavender oil
2 teaspoons of tea tree oil
2 teaspoons of cedarwood oil

Put into a 1 litre spray bottle. Top up to make 1 litre with either water or cold tea. Shake well before spraying and give a quick shake after every few squirts to make sure the oil is mixed with the water.

Spray on twice a day using enough to leave a fine mist on the coat. Ok for round sensitive areas.

I have used this on people as well as horses, but please do a patch test first in case your horse reacts to any of the above ingredients.

Cost works out about £3.00 a litre - not as cheap as some receipes but this does work well and smells nice.

Avon is on offer at the moment, and if you buy in bulk and get trade prices, go to http://www.essential oils direct - they are very reasonable.

On my gelding I also smear the following round his sheath area - 1 heaped tablespoon of sudocream mixed with 1 level teaspoon of sulpur and 5 drop of teatree oil - very smoothing and a good repellant - also excellent on mudfever and grease in heavies.

I know a few people including those from Scotland have found the spray I make effective and I also spray my OH when poo picking with it - he is a walking dinner to midges without it.
 
My receipe is as follows:

5ml Lavender Oil
5ml Tea Tree Oil
5ml Eucalyptus
5ml Neem Oil
3ml Bog Myrtle
5ml Surfactant (disperses the oils)
450ml Water

Measure out and mix the above ingredients.
Shake well.
This is the concentrate.
Dilute 125ml of this mixture with 375ml water.
This makes the flyspray.
Remember to shake the flyspray
really well before applying.

I added a handful of chopped elderberry leaves and three cloves of chopped garlic to the usually stuff people have put and it seems to be working really well.
 
Dont go mad with the Avon SSS if using it neat. I used it neat on my boys mane and topline the other year, it was the very hot summer and yes it works fantastic but he went all scurvy and then I relised it had burnt him, I felt awful. Poor boy, I had basically cooked him
