fly problems already?!

It was a really hot day today, so I turned my horse out without a rug on. Going down to the field he was swishing his tail and the flies really seemed to get on his nerves - so I just turned him out for an hour and a half. When I came to get him he was waiting at the gate - I noticed his ears were bloody from little flies in his ear. I was wondering if anybody knew how to keep the flies off effectively especially away from his ears? - i just don't think it would be the best idea to spray fly spray down his ears!

You could use a fly mask with ear covering.

I totally agree! a fly mask is the best way forward especially as most sprays and things aren't really successful and you can't spray them on his ears. neem oil, you rub it on his willy, behind his elbows, top of his tail head, behind ears and even inside ears. it lasts a long time, if he is being bitten on his head/ears he is being bitten everywhere else as well
