Yesterday before I set off riding out around the forestry the flies were everywhere so I literally covered Ali in Barrier Fly Repellent, but when I arrived back to my yard I found several fly bites on his face and neck. I cleaned the area around them and put some black wound powder on them as that helps to repel flies and it was worth a try... Well it hasn't kept them away from the bites either and the bl**dy flies are now seriously p*ssing him off...

I've also tried Fly-Away, NAF Off, Net Tex and several "home-made" fly repellents but they're useless... I never had any problems with flies last summer, but this year has been pretty bad...

So does anyone have any recommendations for a fly repellent which actually WORKS?

My home made stuff is about the best but to be honest if the flies are bad we are never going to stop them. This weather isnt'helping. Wet and warm not good for us warm blooded creatures!

read this on another forum and they all seem to be raving about it, if it works it is going to be much cheaper than the equine stuff we buy! I was going to try it as the flies are driving my horses mad too.

This is what I copied .... "Avon do a skin so soft spray for us that everyone up here in the highlands swear by and its only £3. So have a look on the website or see if someone llocal does avon? " The post was asking the same as yours about horse flies! I did have to look twice I must admit! but it was honestly!

Hope it helps will be trying it out when I can get some going to try ebay first.

Good luck!

Been a few threads on here in the past about avon skin so soft , and in my opinion it does work. doesn't keep all the flies off (what would?) but cuts them down loads . Not sure if it stops them biting or stops the horses feeling the itch from the bite but I never ever have a rubbed mane or tail or any bite bumps unless I forget to put it on often enough . I use it about twice a week and rub well in . Hope this helps.

I have had good results with sensitive skinned horses feeding Global Herbs Fly Free - I will admit it makes your horse stink especially when they sweat! - but flies seem to hate it and I didn't have to use topical fly sprays as well so worked out cheaper!

As far as I know they changed the ingredients in Avon Skin So Soft and thats why it doesn't work so well now, I used to swear by it but unfortunately, no longer X

You'll never stop flies completely but I've ridden in a Boett rug before as that works for a sweet itch horse so how about riding in a fly rug?..

I'm using Global Herbs louse/insect powder. It's about £4 for a container that's like a large talc shaker. Put some on your hands gently rub it on the dock, crest and under the belly. You can be very economical with it. The flies hate it and it's hardly noticeable plus it brushes straight out.

i use nettex fly spray it is brill and i get some spot on from the vets so if a fly does bite your horse it kills the fly straight out dead!
