I do. Mine is not the cheapest home made repellent but it smells wonderful, good for sensitive skins, great for horses and people - my OH has a good squirt before poo picking or he gets munched badly. Works well, particularly for midges. I know H&H people have made it and said it was very good for them. The oils also give a lovely shine to the coat.
It is:
5 caps of dettol - from a 500ml size bottle
250 ml of Avon Skin so Soft and fresh - 500 ml bath oil. This can be halved if midges not too bad.
1 1/2 teaspoons of citronella oil
1 1/2 teaspoons of eucalyptus oil
1 1/2 teaspoons of lavender oil
1 1/2 teaspoons of tea tree oil
1 1/2 teaspoons cedarwood oil
Put into a 1 litre spray bottle. Top up to make 1 litre with either water or cold tea. Shake well before spraying and give a quick shake after every few squirts to make sure the oil is mixed with the water.
Spray on twice a day using enough to leave a fine mist on the coat. Ok for round sensitive areas.
Costs about £2.50 - £4 a litre depending on what you pay for the ingredients. I always take advantage of the Avon 1/2 price offer and stock up. I buy my essential oils in 100 ml bottles from http://www.essential oils direct and get a big order to get the trade discount with free postage.
We used to make our own when i worked on a large riding school. we made it up in buckets full so we could wash the horses off with it, just a couple of caps full of citreonella and either vineger or washing up liquid to a bucket of water, it meant we could wash off sweaty ponies and fly repel at the same time saving time and money, as for working it was ok short term. The only ones that seem to last longer are deet based
Yes make two and alternate them. Can't remember whats in them as haven't made any in ages!!! but the vingear one works better I think!!!
Its much cheaper and don't mind drenching them in it!!!
