I make my own up and it is good for both flies and midges.
5 caps of dettol - from a 500ml size bottle
250 ml of Avon Skin so Soft and fresh - 500 ml bath oil. This can be halved if midges not too bad. I am presently using one third of a bottle which is working well.
1 teaspoon of citronella oil - can go up to 1 ½ if midges bad.
1 teaspoon of eucalyptus oil
1 teaspoon of lavender oil
1 teaspoon of tea tree oil
1 teaspoon cedarwood oil
Put into a 1 litre spray bottle. Top up to make 1 litre with either water or cold tea. Shake well before spraying and give a quick shake after every few squirts to make sure the oil is mixed with the water.
Spray on twice a day using enough to leave a fine mist on the coat. Ok for round sensitive areas.
I have used this on people as well as horses, but please do a patch test first in case your horse reacts to any of the above ingredients.
Cost works out about £3.00 a litre - not as cheap as some receipes but this does work well and smells nice.
When Avon do skin so soft on special, I stock up for the year to keep costs down. You can get the oils on e-bay or another good site is http://www.essential oils direct - again I buy in bulk to get the trade prices and keep the oils in a cool dark place so they keep.
I use this and now so does the rest of the yard, but went to buy some more skin so soft off the Avon web site yesterday and they have sold out, but you can get some of ebay if desperate.
im trying the above recipe after all the great comments ive heard about it. bought a bottle of avon SSS from ebay for £2.50 +£3.25 p&p and got the oils from ebay shop who supply essential oils so they were cheaper!
just waiting for oils to arrive so will let you know when ive made it!
can i slightly hijack the post and ask where you gout your 1litre spray bottlr from, or did you make 1litre and store what ever didnt fit in the bottle?
I use an old 2 litre bottle of tesco value water to make up a big batch - I then use a whole bottle of skin so soft (Chancer gets mild sweet itch so I make it very oily) then double the amount of oils and dettol I listed above. I then pour out what I need into a spray bottle.
Saves time making 2 litres at a go. I get through about a litre a week between my two, but I put a huge amount on Chancer's tail and belly and Cairo is a big horse - lot of area to spray.
1 Table spoon citronella
2 spoons of White vinegar
Couple of squirts of Encover(washing up liquid)
Avon Skin-So-Soft
Crushed garlic glove
and add this lot to 3 teabags in 500ml Jug of hot water .cool and bottle!
Seems to work well and fine on the horses coat!
