Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could recommend a fly rug for my thoroughbred that gets rather hot and sweaty. I wouldn't bother with any rug if it weren't for the fact that there seems to be loads of midges eating him already.

He's been off work for the best part of a year with a tendon injury so he hasn't got much of a neck, which I reckon might make some rugs slip down.

Any ideas much appreciated as this is something you can only find out from personal experience I guess!

I am saving up for a Rambo Sweet Itch hoody, have heard lots of good things about them and they have holes for the ears to keep the neck bit in place.

This - absolutely. Best rugs on the market and come with a waterproof liner which can be used if it looks like rain. Worth the money.

Unless he gets sweetitch from the bites so needs a rug for that, look at the Amigo Mio. They are feather light and come with a neck but not a belly flap, hence me saying about SI.

I have had a Premier Equine that made the horse sweat within minutes of wearing it, and a Shires that was almost like chain mail, far too hot. The Amigo lets air circulate well.

I actually prefer the Amigo Bug Rug to the Mio to be honest as the material is much more breathable - although it is slightly heavier than the Mio, it is definitely cooler and I would say much more comfortable on the skin (bearing in mind that I am one of those people that is ultra sensitive to some materials against my skin!). My Bug Rug fits my narrow shouldred Anglo Arab very well, so I would think that is worth a try - I think you can get a rain sheet attachment for it as well??

I have seen advertised somewhere a new design that is supposed to be great for keeping them cool, but I can't remember what make it was - I didn't take much notice as it was way out of my price range! May have been a Bucas??

I have all of ours in them, whether they get sweet itch or not. They are so much better than other fly rugs we have used, and last two or three seasons, so worth the initial outlay. My mare gets hot and sweats easily, but these are cotton, so despite looking quite heavy, breathe.

I have the weatherbeeta Cool Coat which a friend recommended to me they do a couple of different styles and are only about £40-£50 I think

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Rambo sweet itch hoody seems to be the most popular option but I have seen the rambo fly buster for a very good price. Does anyone have one of these? The material looks quite thick from the picture so not sure if it would make my boy sweat.
