Hi - Wonder if I could ask some advice regarding the sizing of fly rugs as I'm having a problem trying to get one that fits my gelding nicely.

He's 17.2hh and is TB x ID but his build is more TB....... he also has very high withers. After much looking on line etc I thought the Mark Todd Combo looked ideal so I ordered a 7ft one. It fits him perfectly everywhere but across his chest where it is very tight. It accomodates his high withers and looks comfortable but as I say it is very tight across his chest and is open a little being that its down to the last hole on the buckles.

Are there any nice fly rugs around that maybe someone has managed to find after experiencing something similar with their horse.

Many thanks x

Hi, I had the same problem with you with that fly rug. My TB has deep and wide chest with a very high wither and the MT rugs usually fit him very well.

I got one of these last year and it is a much looser fit around the chest, although I think they were discontinued so now hard to come by. Very light cotton, no belly flap but fits well and goes in the washing machine:

I had the rug repair lady add an extra chest strap to keep it in place better.

I also have a MT airmesh combo which is not nearly so tight on the chest as the fly rug was, but it is nylon lined in parts and I think the cotton sheet is cooler.

I find the big tail flaps on summer/fly rugs do more harm than good - he can't swish his tail very much due to their size, so I've cut them off!
