The bugs seem to be terrible at the moment where I am so I am considering buying a rug for the first time as spray just doesn't seem to cut it.

He is quite a hot horse - also dark bay so doesn't do well on hot days. I'm wondering whether a light coloured rug would help this aswell.

Any suggestions for rugs that help reflect the heat as well as keep the bugs at bay?

Thanks everyone :)

I'm trying an aussie amigo this year for the same reasons, plus its a bit showerproof too!

Thanks, think that one is a bit more than I ideally want to spend :(

my boiling hot Welsh is in a kool coat with mesh. Much cooler in that than when he is naked

Ooh brilliant :D that sounds perfect. When it was absolutely boiling a few weeks ago my lad (wb x tb) spent the whole time lying down looking miserable :( so I just took him back to his stable in the end. I've had a look at that rug - seems to have good reviews and I can pick one up for about £30 online :D

My mare has a Kool Coat, not the mesh type though, and it keeps her cool in the stable, I wouldn't put her out in it though as it'll just soak up the water if it rains.

All mine go out in Kool coats :D Infact, pretty much the whole yard does! Dries in 10mins. It poured on Saturday, i rushed down to get them in and they were dry

Mine has a Rambo protector,he's quite a hot horse, prone to sweating up if I get rugs slightly wrong! Seems ok with this rug even on really hot days.

Ive just given up with the cool coat. Was the standard style. Not genorous in shoulder. She busted out of it first night, blamed horse next door grabbing her.
I sewed on another chest strap rug off in field, chest straps busted.

She is high in the shoulder but never had a rug fit like that on her. Luckily I only paid £15 for it in sale on ebay, which is why it didnt go back.

That surprises me! Mine all have big shoulders and are very wide - i find the Kool Coat a good generous fit!
I have 4 standard style ones i use on a rota in the field, 1 i keep for shows and then the mesh one. Infact, some of mine are 6/7 years old.
