Fly rugs and mosquitos

My horse doesn’t seem to mind the flies that come out in the day too much, but at dusk he gets so wound up by the mosquitos and can’t stop kicking, biting and running around the field for hours. We don’t have a stable unfortunately. But will a fly rug stop the bites, or will a mosquito be able to bite straight through it? Or can anyone recommend any non-spray repellants.

I would go for a bug rug in that case - the fabric is thicker to repel the biters & they tend to have belly protection too - I have a Shires one which is effective ?

I’d use a good fly rug and then repellent on areas not covered by the rug. A good non spray repellent is the Neem Wonder Wax from www.eqwax.co.uk - you brush, sponge or wipe it on. Very effective, long lasting and economical too.
