Pony has done the last 2 summers in his Derby house fly rug and it's been fine. However, it's now a bit tight over his neck. He's a fell so is fairly chunky over his front end. Am considering the snuggy bug body but would appreciate some opinions or recommendations.

Also, we now have quite a huge mane so any tips on how to control it under the rug would be good, currently working a half running plait half big fat plaits combo!

Goes without saying we're looking for a rug that won't rub his mane!

Thanks :)

Amigo Bug Rug has a generous neck, my 17hh was left late to be cut so has a huge neck the amigo leaves enough room to get my little TB neck in there aswell not that I would stuff two horses in one rug ;o)

Thanks, a couple of horses at tin yard have amigos so I might take a look. My concern with them is that the neck on them doesn't seem to come very far up. His current one is a hood that hooks over his ears as in the past he's rubbed the top of his neck.

If you need a rug with ear holes that is also big necked then a Horseware Sweet Itch Hoody or the Premier Equine copy have generous necks ( not as deep as the Amigo) but certainly not as tight round the throat as the cheaper brands.

I use a Rambo Hoody for my big necked, fluffy maned cob, but I bought it a few sizes too big so there is lots of room. I also ensure I do it up whilst he's eating so the rug gathers at the neck for space and doesn't tighten when he's grazing. With his mane, I wash, oil and comb it through so it sits neatly underneath and stays looking really nice :) Hope that helps

I have a bug body for my mare. I think it would fit a chunky neck ok as its stretchy, but the material is quite heavy. Also only buy it if you have a very obliging horse as it doesnt have a zip like the jams do and so you have to bunch it up and literally heave it on over the horses head. Its very tight and leaves them blind for a couple of seconds whilst you sort out getting it over their ears! Unless they are meant to have a zip and I have a faulty one as it seems a little ridiculous! Certainly not the product you want if you are going to be changing it off everyday imo. Also I found my mares tail kept coming partially out of the tail flap when she rolled leaving her tail stuck and bug body pulled weird. This was easily rectified by plaiting her tail in a loose plait from underneath the dock down (she does have a relatively thick tail), but is a bit of a pain. However once on and sorted it does do a good job and keeps her very well protected, I use it in conjunction with their udder cover which is fab :D! So it depends what you are looking for really :). I bought a mark todd one thats great with the flexi neck panel for length but not sure it would fit a thick neck. Ive heard great things about PE flysheets, I use their turnouts - only t/os I will buy now- but wasnt keen on the over the ear design as theyve never stayed put on mine before and the necks didnt look very long in their pictures, but apparently they are longer in RL. :). Hope that helps a little.

I've got the sweet itch hoody for my mare, but to be honest I'm not impressed with the neck. The ear holes are useless - one shake and she's got them out, so it sits with the 'hoody' bit ruffled behind her ears. I think the neck is quite tight, too. It fits her nicely elsewhere in the body and I certainly couldn't have used the next size up. Other than the neck issues, I really like the feel of it - very robust!
