having them washed in insecticide as an extra defence against the flies?? Just ordered the BFG a new one which has a detachable neck cover and mask. He is a fly magnet, especially horse flies xx

Also does anyone use the ride on fly rugs, thoughts??

No, it's not worth it! Besides dont you ever wash your fly rug over the summer? I do, I wash mine about once a week and if I feel it necessary I spray fly spray on the outside of the rug!

I am thinking about investing in one of the ride on fly rugs though as my thin skinned warmblood mare has zero, and I mean zero tolerance for flies and it can make hacking on a warm day a bit of a nightmare.

No it may react with your horses skin. Get 2 rugs and wash weekly or more regular, they dry overnight. Nikwax make a product called Skitostop which is sprayed onto the rug and is supposed to kill anything that lands. Rambo also make a rug like this but they are expensive. I think the Skitostop lasts through washes too. Nuumed nuwash is a very good product to wash your rug in and is good for any horse with sensitive skin rather than using domestic wash powders/liquids.
