fly rugs??

i use them & i love the rambo ones. did try an amigo one and hated it so have gone back to the rambo ones

I have them, I only use them if it's warm and still as we're very near the coast and the breeze keeps the flies away. I have 4 different types - a mark todd (older style), a shires maxi flow, a new premier equine bug buster and a riff raff one. Out of the four I would say the bug buster is best with the shires one a close second as it has the belly pad etc. The mark todd one is ok but material is quite scratchy and it bizarrely is self righting with only leg straps. Riff raff one is on our section b and it's quite a generous cut! You'll get lots of different opinions on this - I think it's down to personal preference at the end of the day!

I use fly rugs all summer on my old TB mare - she can't stand flies on her...twitches, fusses, and ultimately has big lumpy fly bites on her.
This year, my 3yo has had a bad reaction to bites, so she's in a fly rug too.
My other - Shire x TB is impervious to insect attack...she doesn't feel a thing...so is nude when the other two are fly rugged...which is just as well as she gets hotter.
I've had some cheap ones (Olympian, Aerborn, and tried Premier Equine but it was a poor fit) but now have decided the Rambo Protectors are worth the extra money - my last one is still ok after 5 years of heavy use (day and night) although the lining is disintegrating).
My horses seem to be comfortable in them, too.

My TB wore his Rambo Flyprotector 24/7 for most of last summer which allowed him to be out otherwise he goes crazy with the flies and gets bitten to death .... they still get him through the rug tho

. He is in it for the 2nd year but it is now brown where it should be oatmeal in the close contact places, so need another one ... see below msg

My old boy is in the Rambo Hoody and it is stopping the rubbing so far although it is early days yet

PS I chose these Rambo ones due the breast fastening (their unique clip thing

) as it is the only one I feel does not garrotte the horse when they graze!

I've just bought 2 Amigo bug rugs for both my redhead chestnuts and they are brill- keeps all the flies away and are not too hot etc. Would recommend them- and for £29.99!! what a bargain!
