This year i am thinking on investing in a fly rug for my mare as she keeps ending up crawling in beasties and is rather uncomfortable.
She's petrified of sprays and even reacts to the smells...i'm getting a bit tired of dodging her feet trying to put any potions on her!
I've seen a few which aren't too expensive [trying to go from about £30-£35]
The one i'm most interested in is the Saxon Softmesh combo

and two of derby hourse's own

Does anyone have any other suggestions or used any of these rugs?

I'm mostly taken with the saxon tbh but they seem quite shallow so i'm not too sure...

thank you

IMHO combos are the work of the devil

Never had one that didn't garrote the horse or cause rubbing on the wither.

However a rug and neck cover might be more pricey. I like the Shires maxiflow (not combo!) and JHL (Mark todd without the brand.

We use the Saxon ones (I think we have 4 or 5) and they've been great, we use a bib to prevent rubbing of the shoulders under all our rugs (so I don't know whether they would rub without), but they haven't rubbed the mane, slipped or been too shallow.

Thank you very much everyone!
The main thing about the saxon i was worried about was the depth as my friends pony had a saxon rug [not a fly one] and it looks like a skirt! but now my horse has lost weight maybe it wont be such a problem!

I have had a number of different fly rugs and some are defintely much better than others.

Weatherbeeta combo twisted, pulled back on the shoulders and the neck cover didn't even go halfway up the neck. On the plus side it washed very well in the machine so at least it always looked nice

Rambo sweetitch hoody is brilliant on my tb who is super-sensitive to flys. It covers his entire body and stops him coming out in rashes all over. The only downside to it (apart from the price tag

) is that he does get pretty hot in it, but then again the material is quite thick so it's not suprising.

Derby House buzz away fly combo - my ISH was getting bothered by the midges so I just wanted a cheapy rug to use when they were at their worst. It fits very well, hasn't rubbed so far, and it doesn't twist or pull back. The belly flap on it is fantastic, covers from the girth right back to in front of his sheath. It has a hoody part with ear holes like the rambo one but it was too tight on my boy so I don't bother with it. For £29.99 I have been very impressed.

I have 3 different fly rugs: weatherbeeta soft mesh combo, Rambo dustbuster, and Rambo flyprotecter!

The weatherbeeta always slips back and seems tight at the shoulder even though it is a size too big!

Rambos i cannot recommend enough, they are really hardwearing barely move and do the job well!
