The other day i went to get Gem in and she actually had a midges on her belly! (ITS MARCH!!)

They are tiny b****rs which all go in aroung the whurls on her belly and when i pull them off they burst and theres blood on my fingers <YUCK!>

She is really sensitive and when i use any fly repellent it brings her skin up and flaky black bits come to the surface (shes grey so the black is her skin?!)

Because of this i try to avoid using these potions and dose her up with a tonne of garlic which does help.

I was wondering about fly rugs. I really dont like the idea of using a rug over the summer as i think irs so good for them to get the sun on their coats, but i wondered what peoples experiences were of them?

I wouldnt want anything which would continue to rub- we battle that enough in the winter!

also i assume you would need to keep them washed as otherwise they will only attract flys?

Opinions form you kind bunch PLEASE!!

I've got a Rambo Dustbuster. They're not that expensive. The reason I like it is because everything rubs my boy, and it has no seams/joins in it, it is just 1 piece of material that is really soft and stretchy, so is really comfortable and moves with him. Highly recomend.

We use a sweetitch rug from snuggyhood, they are expensive but you will need one that cover the belly well. They wouldn't rub , I wash mine each week on a nice day and have a spare for that day, which is a tatty one

As your mare is so sensitive and she gets them on her belly, you really need to get a full cover rug, eg Boett.

I used to look after a horse with sensitive skin - I got a bottle of baby oil and crushed some garlic into it and left it for a week. Result = very garlicy baby oil which went on without causing any rashes, just a pungent horse....

I use an Amigo Bug Rug and it's fab, it's really light and keeps icky flies at bay!! It's dead cheap aswell which is always a bonus.

The Amigo Bug rug is a great buy but wouldnt fit my boy around his neck/chest which is odd because he has an Amigo T/o and all his other rugs are horseware. I ended up buying a premier equine fly rug and its fantastic and cheap with a free fly mask too.

Hi

My pony has mild sweet-itch and I find the Rambo Hoodie is great. The rug does cover a large area of the belly and has ear loops which are great for protecting the poll area.

My horse has the exact same midgey things on him. I found the rugs dont cover enough of the belly and they just bit ealsewhere (his sheath) but Naf Midge off is good stuff and the only thing i have found to keep them at bay.

My sensitive tb used to wear the rambo sweetitch hoody which was great because it's thick enough to stop things biting through the material. I've found the best thing to put on their belly whorls and sheath is summer fly cream, it's bright yellow so wear gloves if you don't want to look like marge simpson

My Tb gets badly bitten, and, like yours, is allergic to many fly sprays. I now make my own - 1/4 of a bottle of citronella oil (the large ones that are around £4), and a bit of canter coat spray then diluted with water and shaken. It leaves her coat shiney, not greasy and seems more effective than the commercial sprays.
I also had a Rambo fly rug...the big silver ones and it's been really good, not rubbed at all. It doesn't stop the midges from biting her 'seams' though.
