Hi,
After trying loads of different shop-bought fly sprays with varying success, I've found my own concoction that I think works just as well. I've just made up a huge batch of it and thought I would share the recipe. It works really well, and its effects last for ages.

To make 500ml you will need:
  • A 500ml spray container
  • 4 cap fulls of Dettol (from a 500ml bottle)
  • 100ml Net-tex Seven Day Mud Away (makes the coat nice and soft and shiny and gives the repellent staying power!)
  • 1 tablespoon of washing up liquid
  • 2 tablespoons of white wine vinegar
  • 40 drops of Neem oil (You can get all the oils from eBay)
  • 30 drops of citronella oil
  • 30 drops of lavender oil
  • 30 drops of eucalyptus oil
  • 40 drops of tea-tree oil
  • 2 large garlic cloves
  • Approx 400ml water

Method:
  1. Crush garlic cloves into a saucepan, add the water and bring to the boil. Once boiling, remove from heat and allow to cool.
  2. Put the Seven Day Mud Away into the spray container
  3. Add your white wine vinegar to the spray container
  4. Put the washing-up liquid in a small cup or similar container and add all of your oils to it
  5. Add your washing-up-liquid/oils mix to the spray container
  6. Strain the crushed garlic from the water into a jug using a sieve
  7. Once cool, add your garlic water to the spray bottle to make it up to 500mls.

I know making your own may not be for everyone, but I hope it helps someone! :)

Hate to burst your bubble but the voracious horse flies have finished for the season now and it's too early for bots. The only ones now are the bluebottle type flies that hang round eyes, faces, wounds, any source of moisture (yuck). So it probably isn't a magic formula so much as good timing! And anyway, I'm sure that recipe is in one of Saint Delia's cookery books as a delicious jus to go with new roast beef and Yorkshires lol.

I've been using it for a month or so now, when the horseflies were still out in force.
If you're gonna glaze your roast with it, I'd leave out the neem! lol
