Hey everybody.

My instructor advised me to put a veil on Al to cut out surrounding noises and distractions to help him concentrate more on his schooling, as he is so easily distracted and spooky, especially when out and about. He could be working nice and relaxed one minute then will just spook and mess about all of a sudden.

Does anybody else use one?

Are there any more practical looking ones that don't look so 'showy'?

Thanks for your help!

Carrie

Took my 4YO out last Sunday to a training show - first time wearing a fly veil -
Winds were gusting between 70-110kmph! in a very open space - She had ZERO issues with being distracted with noise , wind etc... it definatly helped!

Dont think fly veil ( borrowed was too flashy )

Yes I do and my horses goes nicely in them and is less distracted. And she looks very pretty :) try HKM on ebay I have some of theirs they are very reasonable and lots of different colours,I have black ones with silver piping which are quite subtle on my dark bay horse.

I'm a big fan. I'll even stuff ears under the right (or wrong) circumstances.

Bear in mind I think you can't compete at affiliated level (for dressage and eventing at least) with anything in the horse's ears (though veils over are fine). I've used a fly veil with sheepskin ear plugs to help with a horse hacking before - eskadron do some v understated ones.

Yes, good point! A definite no to ear plugs for any dressage and eventing held under rules (even if that is unaffiliated but using BD/BE rules). I'm fairly sure it's the same for BS, at least if they follow FEI rules.

I think by the time you are out competing seriously it should only be a "why not if you can" element - there are certainly lots of horses that are fine without veils and it's become a fashion for many - but for schooling and hacking, it can make the difference for green/tense horses. I would put it in the same class as any other piece of tack you would use for schooling but not competing.

Hi,

Thanks for that.

So eskadron do understated ones? Any others? Dont want to look like im trying to be a showjumper or showing off especially at riding club lessons, lol!

You can use them at affiliated dressage outdoors, and for BSJA indoors and outdoors, but not for eventing dressage. You can for the jumping phases though :) my sj instructor is also a massive fan and has everything in fly veils.

Mine wear them - i have a few - animo, shockemole, john whitaker.

I love them - and are good for blocking out tannoys etc.

Equitheme ones are fairly cheap and not too in your face.

I have the BE rulebook in front of me and you are allowed ear covers for dressage, though it does state....
"Ear covers must be discreet, not brightly coloured, and must not muffle sound"
