as well as pole rather than doing them across diagonal while he's learning do them as a 10/15m back to track...ie make a teardrop shape! its easier to tech them about changing the bend. thats how we teach the babies anyway

The pole thing really is'nt the answer. The reason you have a problem with this change this way round is a function of straightness. you have to keep the shoulders between the two reins if you really look at the change in terms of straightness you will find especially this way that they tend to dive out as you prepare the change. The left hind by the sounds of it is the strong ' slow leg' you need to make sure it stays quick to the aid of the inside leg at the girth. make sure you have connection throught the ribs up to but not diving out of the right shoulder so keep your right shoulder blade down but your right hip forward. this side is difficult too because of most riders being right handed so your co-ordination this way is not so good and it is not so easy keeping your shoulders parallel to the horses shoulders. I find shoulder in to a couple of steps of halfpass to change a good exercise making sure you keep the canter quality light and active throughout and the shoulders of your horse left to right the same height. if he drops a shoulder he will not be able to engage the hindleg evenly behind and the change stands a chance of being late in front. if he dives out and tightens he will be late behind. Either way the pole on the ground thing is not the way to teach changes as you already have a change on one side and therefore an understanding by your horse what is required it is just a straightnes and balance problem.

Thanks amage, I have done this but he now anticipates and changes himself...not good when I need countercanter in Elementary... ekkk!!! Then again I cannot repremand because he tried?? Then again, he was wrong!! But the one rein is soooo much more difficult...... and when I put my new outside leg on he does quarters in...or travers... instead of changing........???!!!

ahhhhhhhhh.. thanks Partoow...hence we get travers I think??!! Who said this dressage was easy eh??!!!!!! I am sure it is me and yes he does dive down and then breaks into trot..and I look like a rag doll desperately trying to keep the canter!!!!!!! Ok,, I shall try that this morn....spring in my canter and straightness right....I will let you know how I get on!!

Goodluck and remember its a problem for both of you!! Its your weak side too!! If you want to use poles the use two to give you that feeling of being between two straight lines of a corridor. Do this over X and a G and D [ so that would be six poles in all and then you can develope them on the serpentine] really make sure your holding outside leg and your activating inside leg are clear and that you really do move the right hip for ward not just drop your inside left shoulder down.
Really hope that helps. Stick with it and remember same rhythm in same rhythm out!!!!

dont use a pole if our a dressage person i tend to find the horses get used to jumping when changing and im sure for dressage its supposed to be very simple and easy not with a huge leap of the floor !!

my boy also finds one way easier but he is like that with everything - its like us being left or right handed !!
