This morning I took big chap out for his plod. Turned on to a green lane and there is a washing machine dumped in various pieces

. Luckily horse just snorted and mooched past - he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Something else could easily have spun round and dived back on the road. Another bridleway round here has also become a dumping ground for old sofas, rubbish bags, old wheelbarrows etc. Have phoned the flytipper dept of the council up, but they will pick up stuff from the side of the road, but don't seem to bother with bridleways/green lanes etc. So anyone know who is supposed to clear up after these littering b*****ds?

the landowner is legally responsible for clearance of flytipped items - even if they are toxic - the landowner has to pay

if the land is a public right of way and in public ownership then the council is responsible - or the county council

suggest you escalate this to head of dept. and with the rights of way officer at your council to establish who is the landowner

weve got 2 burned out cars along our bp they have been there ages and noone has botherd to remove them !!!
it annoys me,my boy doesnt care though he just walks past but i wouldnt want him to spook at somthing and run in to the car as theres some sharp bits sticking out !! and who would pay the vet bill for that !!!!!

The green lane is a public right of way in public ownership, so thank you for that advice. As for the bridleway, I know who actually owns it but there is no way they will clear it

Yes, you need to contact your council's rights of way department and let them know what the rubbish is, where it is, what bridleway it is and if possible, a grid reference for the bridleway...or at least which area/roads the bridleways lead on to. If you have no joy or don't know where to start...get in contact with www.bridleways.co.uk their email address is info@bridleways.co.uk They have a keen interest in bridleways and will help you or even contact the council themselves if you ask nicely!!!

It really is a shame when such things happen and spoil our bridleways and no one seems to do anything about it...so please report it asap!

Not defending you LA, but it may be that they have to wait until they have a suitable vehicle, our contractors use a normal lorry for most flytipping, but if they have to venture off road they only do it in a 4x4, there may also be an issue with who actualy owns the land - landowner has resonsibility.
