I bought a palomino colt foal a few weeks ago, he had been weaned 3 weeks when i got him.

He had a good coat not that hairy,he is now on 3 feeds a day in preparation for foal shows and has a medium weight foal rug.

In the last week his hair in falling out in handfuls to the extent he has large areas that are bald on his neck and other areas are coming in golden palomino as if he is way to get summer coat

I have had foals in past but never experienced this

Sounds like he's too warm, i wouldn't be rugging a foal yet, I used to just bring ours in at night to keep warm, and only a rug when it's wet & cold.

As far as losing coat in patches, our chestnut filly did this, mainly around her eyes and muzzle, a little on her chest, she was just settling into her coat, she was born bright chestnut and eventually went more liver chestnut.

Agreed - it is far too early to rug a foal, also he is getting plenty of food to keep him warm.
